Nvidia driver 545.29 ?

Had a few problems with the latest Nvidia driver 536.23, so I attempted to re-install the previous version 535.98. For some reason I now have 545.29 installed

Where has this come from? I'm guessing Windows has installed it, even though I've disabled driver installs using Group Policy.
Is this a newer driver than the one released by Nvidia?

Here are few suggestions that might help:

Nvidia driver versions are always incremental.
When you want to install another version of a driver, uninstall current driver and then install new one (instead of reinstall),
optionally with "Clean install" option.

Clean install option is required if you change from standard to DCH or vice versa.
Prefer DCH driver over standard.
Prefer WHQL\certified drivers over beta.

Can you please confirm if your driver type is DCH or standard?

To verify, in start menu search for Nvidia control panel, click on help menu -> system information
here take a look at "Driver type" item, what does it say?

If it says DCH you must download and install DCH driver, otherwise standard type must be installed.
If you want to switch from one to the other, then during install don't use express install, use "advanced" and check the "clean install" checkbox.

To download specific driver type (which depends on current one) use advanced search and specify either DCH or standard from drop down menu here:

Driver is DCH, have been using DCH for some time now.

You've just helped me out to figure that it must be true that Windows could update nvidia driver.
I too have disabled auto driver updates in system settings (not GPO) but somehow sometime my driver was updated to 536.23
However last time I was installing it, I'm sure it was 535.98 because I keept installation file.

Why you now have 545.29 I don't know, if you uninstall and install instead of reinstall then it's a mystery.
I've reverted my driver now back to old version to test and it properly shows new version in NV control panel.

edit:
Windows does not auto update nvidia drivers, (I was looking at wrong place in my backup)

I re-installed 535.98 using a Clean install, but disabled the internet connection before installing. Now I have 535.98 and it hasn't updated to a different version. I just don't get where 545.29 came from as it's not in Windows Update catalog. My only guess is that as I'm running Release Preview there's a newer driver for non-public release (perhaps preparing for 23H2) ?

I still don't get why it would update by itself though

These drivers are coming from Microsoft...
I suspect they silently pushed it to Insiders and my computer is part of the Release Preview channel

Sorry, I still can't help you figure out about the old version you had.

I had 535.98, updated to 536.23 last week. My PC crashed yesterday while gaming which it's only ever done a few times. So I've reverted back to 535.98 to see if I get any more crashes. While I did a clean install of the 535.98 drivers (from 536.23) for some reason 545.29 got installed.

Aaah you got this as well? Sneaky Microsoft, especially as I disabled driver updates using Group Policy

I think in your case windows downloaded old driver before you set your GPO setting, and that one was sitting on your system all the time.

When you install new driver the old one is not automatically removed.

Reality is worse... Even if you blocked the drivers install, Microsoft ignore it.

Windows is reportedly force-installing graphics drivers, ignoring user settings

One of the first people to have reported the issue was Twitter user @ghost_motley, who claimed Windows 10 and 11 are ignoring the group policy editor settings...

This will prevent MS from loading drivers other then the ones you select and install. Safest way to avoid that issue.

Absolutely. And as I did a clean install of Windows yesterday, the 545.29 prevented Forza 5 from running. Rolled back to 536.23 and the game is now running again. Nice of MS to send us UNSIGNED drivers

Windows Update recently pushed through NVIDIA Graphics Driver 545.31.
I suspect it's causing me Firefox video flickering problems.

I saw on one of the other tech forums (Guru3D) that the Geforce 545.29 drivers are being pushed out to users of some of the Windows 11 insider channels. I've got an AMD GPU and am on the Win11 Release Preview Insiders Channel and the other day Windows Update without asking if I wanted it or not a installed a pre-release version of the AMD drivers\software for my card.

Have you tried using DDU with the PC disconnected from the internet in safe mode to get rid of all the old drivers and reinstalling the driver version you want?

MS are more and more in my experience if you are on the insider channels for Win11 pushing drivers out whether or the not the user wants them or not. Aka using users PC's as guinea pigs.

Microsoft is fast. They are probably installing 545.xx before the computer finishes rebooting.
So Group Policy isn't even running before 545.xx is installed.

Here is the secret ancient method used by the Magi...

DDU Instructions - Nvidia
1. Get this program, here: Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) | Wagnardsoft ...get the latest version, and save it to your desktop.
2. Get the DCH/Game Ready vid card driver here, use the Manual Search: Advanced Driver Search | NVIDIA ...save this to your desktop.
Unhook the internet completely.
3. Reboot into Safe Mode and run DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) choose the "Highly Recommend Option", and just do what it tells you.
4. After it's done, reboot to normal mode, then just double click the Nvidia driver to install.
[See pics below]. If it want's to reboot, let it.
Rehook the internet.
