Solved Should I start thinking about other than Macrium

I kept my MR7 installs and their license numbers. I think I can fully revert from MR8 to MR7 if need be.

Did you purchase a v8 upgrade for those v7 keys? If so, I think you'll find that your v7 keys will have been retired and can no longer be used to install v7. This is what I get if I try to use one of my upgraded v7 keys.

Yes, that's what I got too, a 50% discount to upgrade my v7 4-pack of keys to a v8 4-pack. All my v7 keys now return 'licence not found' if I try to use them. Happy with v8 though, so not a problem

I have more machines than licences, so run v7 Free on the rest. Seems to be fully compatible with v8, images created with one can be used in the other.

I don't understand, why would anyone want to go back to 7 after upgrading to 8? v8 works great, just like v7 did.

I guess Macrium is just doing what Malwarebytes has been doing a long time. MWB gives you the pro version for 14 days and it then reverts to free version. Until then they nag you to buy it with popups. Yes, you can go into account section of MWB and deactivate the trial but most people don't know they can do that. But like MWB, Macrium is one of the most solid backup solutions out there. I've used a number of them and it's by far the best. It's well worth the price.

Paramount always issue the free version around 90 days after release version. You can install paid version as a trial and after 30 days, it reverts to free version. It has been confirmed by the Reflect Team, it stays as V8 (web page erroneously said it revets to V7).

Actually I paid 73.80 for my 4 pack of MR 8 keys. That was with the 50% discount.

I have both one paid V7 and several free V7's installed. We all like free software but if no one ever buys the software it eventually will either be discontinued or the free versions will no longer be available.

V7 does what I need as I only do full disc (all partition) disc images. But at some point I'll upgrade my paid version to a paid V8.

Good one...but you just "dated" yourself. Doh! Now I did too, unless those old commercials have made a comeback. I wouldn't know since I have not seen a TV in 25+ years. Way OT, but V8 with some vodka, salt and hot sauce makes a pretty good Bloody Mary.

Hi there

Macrium does work brilliantly as most people on these forums will readily testify to.

The argument about Free Software doesn't really apply since if the Pro features bring extra wanted features to the table then people will buy it. Having a decent Free product also allows a lot more people to test the basic functionality so the pro version can be rolled out as a solid stable release. There's nothing wrong in using the free version if the features it supplies are the only thing you need especially to users who don't use Windows every day and just need to take the occasional Windows OS system image.

For example I see for myself no interest in differential / incremental backups, VIboot, encryption, data backup etc so there's no reason for me to go for the paid version -- others really do find these features useful and the paid version is 100% worth it for them. Data backup, Data recovery , Disk cloning etc I use Linux for. Macrium Free I simply use for Windows imaging. cloning, and restoring while on a Windows Host system.

Lots of paid for products are developed on the back of Free software - and the developers haven't gone bust.

What I hate though are hobbled things - like video converters etc which only allow you to convert 2 mins of video, reduced quality and with watermarks all over the place. A Free version should have the basic functionality and allow full use of those functions like Macrium Free V7 (and I gather from the V8 version too).

Have been running around with 3 party tools and a good toilet after that with commercials , go figure.
Does "vidcompact" work, using that in a droid

Macrium Reflect Devs typically don't cripple their free versions much, and in fact, they offer a lot more features than other backup solutions in their free version.

I'm confident that I have 0 need to move to another product for normal backups.

But, just in case, I always keep an updated CloneZIlla .ISO handy for a 'backup' backup.

Fixed that for you, Differentials and viBoot are both included in the Free version.

^^^^^^^^^^^ This. Both of those are offered in the free version, and it's really, really hard to find another good FREE backup solution that that has a fully-fleshed out Differential backup plan available, not to mention the ViBoot feature.
