Solved Upgrading Dell XPS 17 L702X from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro

Tried clean install of Windows 11 using the Rufus 4.6 USB solution. Failed at the same spot on the third restart after installing. Stuck on Windows 11 logo. My laptop most have some hardware issues. For now I will "Mark as Solved", even though it is not solved. Will try some other things like swapping out my SSD for another drive, etc... Thanks everyone for all your help.
I had to use Rufus 4.5 to make my ISO. I used the SourceForge link when I downloaded it. It automatically downloaded when I clicked on the link. rufus 4.5 - Bing

Thanks for the info. I ordered a new Samsung 870 EVO SSD from Amazon. Will be here tomorrow. Will swap out my older Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Then do a clean install.

Got this error when installing "0x1900101 - 0x40017. Sounds like I have some driver issues from the research I did on it. Will go through Device Manager again and check for driver updates. Plus manufacturer websites.

I hope you fix your problem by updating drivers. If not try disconnecting all devices not needed to run windows. You could also try disabling the graphics card driver and use the basic MS driver. What ever you do, please make sure you have a working system image you can use if needed.

Just going to swap out the old Samsung SSD(which has the OS, plus all my apps and files) for the new Samsung SSD, and clean install Windows 11 on the new SSD using the USB ISO.

Just going to swap out the old Samsung SSD(which has the OS, plus all my apps and files) for the new Samsung SSD, and clean install Windows 11 on the new SSD using the USB ISO.
Just in case, I recommend keeping the working OS on the old drive until you know for sure that the clean install works.

it maybe an idea to disconnect any other drives you have in the computer and just have the drive you plan to install Windows on installed. you can put the drive back in after the install.

this way you can eliminate that problem while installing.
as the error code 0x1900101 - 0x40017 is also related to hardware as well as drivers.

best of luck, Steve ..

Installed the new Samsung SSD, removed the older Samsung SSD and original Dell HDD. Used Rufus 4.6 bootable USB and tried clean install of Windows 11 Pro. BSOD error screens over and over after finishing installing and restarting. Multiple errors. Going to re-install the original Samsung SSD, and use Windows 10 Pro. Thanks everyone for all your help.

sorry to hear the news on that i have looked over your system specs and cant find anything that stands out that would stop an install of Win 11. the only thing left i can think of is just have a look in the BIOS and ensure UFEI boot is enabled. after that i am out of ideas.

best of luck, Steve ..

It is MBR - Legacy BIOS. It just restarted over and over with different error messages. I captured a few with my phone, but at this point I just don't have the time or will power to continue. I only use the laptop to play music using Windows Media Player through my stereo system a handful of times a year. Just have to live with no security updates after the October date. Thanks again, Steve.

I don't know if this will help, but I have an ancient dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 laptop which is running win 11 just fine. It originally had win 7 but was updated (free) to win 10 a year or so ago.

I used rufus to make the install USB stick and did an upgrade, not a clean install. All installed programs still work and no data was lost.

But first, I took the time to make a few preparations that might be helpful:

1) First, make backup images of your system drive and any other important data. This is always desirable before making major changes in case something goes wrong. Not from fear, but plain common sense.

2) I got rid of the ridiculous dell intel rst "raid" drivers and changed to normal AHCI. Very easy, but you have to first set windows to automatically boot to safe mode before you switch to AHCI in the bios (so windows can boot and download new drivers). Just run msconfig and look under the boot tab to do this. Revert to normal settings after you reboot and are using AHCI. Check that everything is working, then proceed.

2) Convert the system disk to GPT if it's currently the old MBR style. You can use the built in MBR2GPT program in windows. For me it didn't work when windows was running, so I ran it offline after booting to windows RE. (recovery environment). I converted all my other data drives too, but I think that's optional. Check that everything is working, then proceed.

3) In your bios settings (press F2 when booting), set the machine to boot in UEFI rather than legacy/bios mode. Check that everything is working, then proceed.

You should confirm everything is working after each step by booting into windows and making sure there are no problems or errors. Maybe run a few programs or look at a few pictures or use a browser, etc.

I think it will work for you, with only a small amount of patience and attention to detail.
