Windows 11
Hi All,

I am running an ASUS notebook and and Acer Aspire 5. I am trying to set up a daily task to wake up from hiberation at 9am and open an excel workbook.
I am running - Windows 11 Home, Version 23H2, Installed on 15/3/2024, OS Build 22631.3737 on both machines
I have disables the Windows 11 logon screen.
The task schedular is running all taskes that are created by software vendors.
I can not make it run any task that I create, not even opening cmd.exe or notepad.exe on either of my notebooks, so I am clearly doing something wrong.
I have watched many videos and spent hours on this, am now pulling my hair out.
When a task is created, the status is set to ready. But when the time comes, nothing happens.
I notice that when I ask the task to run on demand manually from inside schedular (green triangle), It wont work. But I can disable, enable, go to properties, etc without concern.
I have done all of the obvious such as set the machine to wake up from hibernation, rebooted everytime a task is edited (cant find anywhere if I need to do this or not).
For something that is so simple, it has cost a lot of time.

The only thing that I can see is different from the hundreds of videos is that I am asked for my windows password to save the task.

I am at loss.

Any and all help is graciously recieved.

Setting : Run the task whether user is logged on or not? (Can't remember the exact words, but something similar)

How are you creating the task, from Task Scheduler or from an option in the program?

Thanks fopr that. The task is set to run whether logged in or not.
The task is being created from within schedular, using the Create Task fucntion in the RHS window pain

The task is set to run whether logged in or not.

That's the problem. It must be set to Run only when user is logged on because it's interactive (i.e. opening an Excel workbook).

Only non-interactive tasks can be run without a user logon.

Thansk for that LesFerch. Didn't make any difference though. So now I am wondering if ithas somethign to do with the user account.
i have by passed the win 11 logon screen, but it does flas for about 3 seconds Showing a User Name of Jeff Grant. However, in the Users Acounts, there is no Jeff Grant, only jeff. Perhaps the notebook is loging is as Jeff Grant and not jeff, but I cant fimnd any refferences to a user accoutn of Jeff Grant anywhere other than the logon screen. Any ideas?

Can you get just ordinary MS Excel (alone, in its own right) to start with Task Scheduler timing without that particular spreadsheet opening?

I am wondering if putting cmd and notepad commands into a batch file would be a work around, and creating a task to run the .bat

Perhaps Jeff Grant is the Fullname you declared to MS when you set up the MSAccount that has the Shortname jeff?

Run the command
net user jeff
and look in the Fullname entry.
This cmd can run in cmd prompt & in PS. It just shows data, it does not change anything.

As for the main problem,
- What does Task scheduler, [the task], Task history tab have to say? If it's empty then enable logging for future attempts by clicking on the control on the right-hand side of Task scheduler.
- Waking from hibernation using Task scheduler always used to need mains power to be connected in conventional S3 Sleep computers. In the two S0 Modern standby computers I have checked, this limitation did not apply. You can find out if yours is an S3 Sleep or S0 Modern standby [aka S0 Low power idle] computer by running the command
PowerCfg -a
But the situation can be confused if you have disabled S0 Modern standby. I never do that any more.

All the best,
Denis
