You can either install Windows Live Essentials 2012 or download Windows Movie Maker 2.5 for Vista and install it instead. I have not used both versions too long to recall what the differences are. Why not install both and use the one that suits you? I have but I use VirtualDub or Nero Video since I don't like the limitation of saving to WMV only.

The last time I tried installing it was a few years back now on Windows 10, so I cannot guarantee that you can still install it. It's probably best to only try installing WMM. Note that the offline installer would report that the install fails. This is not entirely true, it failed at a point after Movie Maker had been successfully installed. At least that was the case last time I tried.

Can you still use it to upload videos to websites directly?

Windows 12 I am afraid does not interest me, IMO I guess it will start like other os's in the past pretty much half decent full of flaws and will be developed over time until ii is really good then a new half-baked os will appear

Boy! What a trip down memory lane!
Back in the day, I had many customers who ran Windows ME. But try as I may, I can only remember one great failing in that OS. i.e., Every time the PC booted up, it made a new "recovery" file. (sorry, can't remember exactly what it was called)
But, those files would stack up on the old small HD's till they choked it to death.

I wrote a batch file to delete all those files, and I'd put that in the "Startup" folder, for a daily cleanup. Other than that, I can't really remember any real problems with ME. Sorry, the old memory ain't what she used to be.

PS: Running an ISO for Windows 11 through Rufus, and taking out the MS nastiness, does NOT hamper the operation of the OS core itself. It just runs as sweet and smooth as any previous OS ever did.
After about 20 Win-11 installs, I do have some experience in this matter.

Yes because back in the day (oh, I sound like an old grumpy) YouTube videos were in Flash Video ( .flv) format. Today they are .mp4 files with AVC encoded video and AAC audio.

Nope, you can't log in to upload because Google login credential checks have changed massively in the last few years.

That too. But in new Windows Movie Maker which you download from Windows Store you can save to .mp4 which is YouTube compatible. By the way, neither that or Windows Movie Maker 2.5 for Vista had an option to capture video from a DV camera or analog source. Am I doing something wrong? I have both a DV capture card and an analog video capture card in my system. How do I capture video? Thanks.

Yes OBS Studio and Nero Video and VirtualDub, Windows Media Center etc. But I wonder since the version included in Windows XP does have the option to capture video. Why did you they removed it from the other versions? I haven't checked if Windows Media Encoder 9 can also capture video.

Yes, indeed. That really does appear to be the pattern. The user is the beta tester of the installation until it is satisfactory and stable. Then it's no more fun anymore so new issues are generated and the installation is deemed to approach EOL, and we get to start all over again. Fear not: Windows Insider welcomes your cooperation! The first OS that I personally licensed from Microshaft was Win ME. I had used Win 95 before this and trust me when I say it was a step up from my Tandy. Despite the blue screens and the glitches I was hooked. Then my boss got a PC with Win 98 and I would camp out in his living room so I could learn all the new features while he was out of town entertaining his lady friend.

Not long after I got my top of the line Sony VAIO back in '99 (I think it had a P4 in it) and I thought I was on top of the world. Upgrading to a whole 256 MB of RAM made me feel like a king (especially with a huge 40 GB IDE hard drive and a Trinitron monitor! Lemmie tell ya, it was game on! That is, until the BOSDs started coming. And yes, they kept on coming and coming. Windows Mistake Edition was a fine OS to learn about computers because what with all the registry edits and msconfigs you really didn't have much of a choice when it came to learning how computers worked. You either learned or you put up with the blue screens. Sony support only went so far.

Then my hard working first born daughter bought her own PC. It was a Dell Dimension. It had a Celeron CPU and it ran Windows XP. She let me test drive it. It ran circles around my P4. I was crushed. Try as I might I never could get that Sony to out perform her little Dell Dimension, but I did learn a good deal about hardware in my efforts and I learned what a difference a good operating system can make. Needless to say, my next PC was a Dell. Back in 2004 Dell support was good and I was still learning the ropes. I hadn't quite yet worked up the jam to build my own PC from scratch, which was silly of me because in those days you really could build a superior system and save yourself a bundle; but I was getting my hands dirty swapping out power supplies, RAM, graphics cards, hard drives, etc. At some point I realized after repairing other people's computers that I was already building them. I just wasn't building them from scratch.

I still remember my first experience with SATA. I was ecstatic. If there was ever a piece of hardware that convinced me that building my own PC was worth the effort it was a SATA hard drive. No more fighting with master and slave drives, no more fighting with ribbon cables, and the speed was incomparable. I was sold. So I have Windows ME to thank for this:

It forced me to open my PC and have a look inside. It made me learn how to deal with BSODs, how to set up configurations, how to make registry edits, and how to correctly use my BIOS. It made me realize that a good operating system is just as important as having good hardware. If I hadn't done these things I likely would have never bothered to build my own or anyone else's for that matter.

Advances in PC technology in those days were significant. For the most part, I find these days it's incremental. Flash memory drives have been here for a while now, 64 bit operating systems are nothing new, WiFi, laser mouses, multi-core processors, and so on have been with us going on two decades. Where are the big advances? TPM?? :::face palm::: Seems to me the world of PC tech has hit a plateau. But that's just my view. I'd be interested to read other views about this.

Back in Windows 95 and 98 any misconfiguration could force you format and reinstall! We had to be careful with the region settings in Setup. Choosing the wrong code page would display Greek with symbols and other characters and COULDN'T be fixed after. We had to reinstall. Also installing most drivers and then the chipset driver could lead to a BSOD. Chipset comes always first because every other device depends on it and installing it later would damage other device configuration, hence the BSOD. But if you were careful and did stuff the right order, you had no issues. Yes, the occasional BSOD, but these were very few with careful usage. The proper order is to first configure your BIOS. Once Windows is installed don't dare to touch BIOS, even updating to the next version could lead to BSOD. If it works, don't fix it! If you have to update the BIOS is best to do it BEFORE installing Windows or you risk a BSOD due to hardware configuration changes. After configuring BIOS, clean install Windows, then install chipset drivers first, then graphics and sound and then everything else.

In modern versions such as Windows 7 or later, this order is not important, but better safe than sorry.

P.S.: Experience dictates the Windows disk must ALWAYS be the Primary Master (first on the first IDE port) and DVD is better be Secondary Master (avoid slave to minimize risk of failing while burning a blank disc and creating a toast). If the Windows disk is SATA it better be in the FIRST SATA slot. This is to avoid booting issues if you have more than one disk and BIOS battery fails. The default BOOT priority is to start booting from Primary Master or first SATA port. I know boot priority is not important in modern systems, but It doesn't harm to follow some simple rules. Better safe than sorry.

Or just adjust the default boot order to your own. Easiest and fastest way to ensure the correct drive is used to boot from regardless of OS (and helpful in modern multi-OS boot scenarios as well).

Take control, don't let the computer dictate the terms to you.

I think you weren't paying attention. If the BIOS battery is empty due to old age, it resets to default settings which cancel your custom boot priority order. The default order is starting from the first disk detected. That's why the Windows disk should be in SATA 0 (in most motherboards 1 in the rest). I know Windows 7 or later don't care if booting from the second detected disk, but earlier versions would designate it as drive D rather than C with all the bad consequences. Why get in trouble? Just make sure that Windows disk is at first port, so always C, even with all BIOS settings reset to default.

I think you weren't paying attention. If your BIOS battery dies you have a bigger problem already - fix that first before booting into Windows.

You need a working clock.

All you need to do is set time and date to be synchronised automatically from internet. This can be done in XP and later versions. Not a big deal unless you are offline. I have used many XP era computers with dead BIOS battery. They lose settings every time you turn them off. Time and date are synchronized via internet. No big deal.
