Would Like Helpful Opinion The The Following Laptops

That's always a good idea to go and look and get a feel for things. So that's the G15 ruled out then :-) One Dell Precision 16 model did have onboard ram that wasn't upgradeable, but that was the one that didn't have Nvidia Graphics. It the site shows upgradeable ram then I'm sure it's correct. But it might be things have changed recently. If it is the case that the ram isn't upgradeable on any of them, you might as well get the less expensive one with the Arc graphics. Except it does limit you to 16gb of ram, which, in 5 years time you might regret. So in that case, Glaskutter's advice to get one with 32gb of ram now, was good. Except that will cost a lot more.

I don't know much about Lenovo laptops as I've never had one - some are recommended in reviews. I tend to stick with HP because they're familiar to me and I like the keyboards. I like Asus keyboards as well but their screens mostly have PWM and I avoid that. Most HP's don't have PWM. It's usually the Oled screens that do (I think) and I'm not bothered about an Oled screen. Any screen will do as long as it's not terrible!

Maybe you could call Dell or email them about the specs for the 16 with Nvidia and just check that it does still have upgradeable ram - it does seem to suggest that on the site and ram is available to buy for that machine. So either the sales assistants are incorrect/not up to speed - or they are ahead of the game and know the specs have changed from what is on the site!
I don't know what state or country you are in, but I went by a Staples today while i was out just to see what units they had to get a feel, I did like the HP Pavilion laptops look and key board, so theres that.

I think most of the HP Pavilions will have onboard ram these days though as well. The HP Probooks have upgradeable ram.

HP Probook 15. It has 16gb ram but has a spare ram slot so you'd only need to add another 16gb stick to make it 32gb (although some people think you should replace ram in matching pairs, and I've tended to do that). But it does mean you have two ram slots and can upgrade.

They're supposed to be pretty reliable. It doesn't have Nvidia graphics, being a business laptop, but it does have Intel Iris X and that would do the job fine. It only has 512gb drive but you could replace that with a bigger one.

Sorry that was a uk link. The G9 doesn't seem to be in stock on HP US - just the later model G10 which is out of stock. But it's for sale on Amazon.

Here

This is the G10 on Amazon - with 32gb, 1Tb ssd drive Core i7 - upgradeable ram and Storage $849.95

HP Probook 15" G10

Both 15.6" laptops.

actually liked its look and feel, but there are huge vents on the bottom which appeared to be in-take vents and the model displayed at the store had a bunch of dust chunks stuck up in those vents,
I see that as a plus. Laptops need to pull air in for cooling. All computers do. The large vents will allow more air to be pulled in. The large vents should also make it easier to blow out the dust with a can of electronic duster spray or a cordless air duster. I bought a Fulljoin cordless air duster from Micro center and it works great. Much cheaper to use than those cans of duster spray. On my wife's last laptop the fan was making a loud noise. When I went to blow it out I couldn't find where the air inlet vents were. Seeing how I had to open up the laptop to clean it I would go ahead and replace the fan. When I opened it up I did find it was full of dust. Instead of just blowing it out, I decided to go ahead and replace the fan. It turned out to be a big mistake. I broke the fan plug off the motherboard. It can't be fixed because it way to small of a area to even try to solder it. The only thing my wife lost when we bought the replacement was the touch screen, something she never used so no big deal. And if your wondering, Yes it is a HP refurbed laptop from Micro Center.

Maybe back to the G15 then? Dust on the outside is better than dust on the inside :-) I saw one comment online that there was no dust inside when it was opened up. This review of it sounds good as well. Good performance, well built

I agree the vents are great to have, im just concerned with it laying on a table.... it would potentially just suck too much stuff up into its case also one really couldn't use it placed on your lap

Yes it would be a bit big and heavy for using on a lap maybe. I think your Inspiron 16 sounded fine. And it did show on the website that the nvidia version had upgradeable ram.

If it was me I'd get the HP probook :-) But some people prefer Dell generally. I've never had a Dell laptop so have nothing to compare with.

Ohhh, you are all over the place like me :-), its hard to make a decision isn't it. I've always had Desktop computers Dell or HP, I have only ever had1 laptop, the one I have now which is Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series (7559) Review

So you like the current Dell Inspiron - so best stick with that! And get the Inspiron 16. I would hate not to have upgradeable ram though, so I think the Nvidia version is the one to go for. You'd have plenty of ram for now so no need to take the back off a new laptop straight away :-)

I know they're called laptops but I don't really think there actually supposed to be placed on your lap. #1 using it on your lap can cause a restriction of air flow. #2 and I know this from personal experience. The minimum heat they generate in time can make your legs feel like they're getting cooked. When I want to use my laptops on my lap I always use a laptop cooler. That's just my opinion from my experiences. In the end, you have to make the decision on what is right for you.

a bunch of dust chunks stuck up in those vents, {snip} ... {snip} So I'm still open to suggestions.
Compared to the Dell G16, the Asus TUF Gaming A16 (2024) that I told you about in your other thread weighs less heavy and has dust filters on its fans. BTW so does my TUF Gaming F16 (2024).

These gaming laptops from Asus also run cooler, less noisy than many other gaming laptops from other known brands offering similar specs, often at a significantly lower price tag.

My Asus F16 has USB4/Thunderbolt 4, the Dell G16 still doesn't unless you go up the ladder by choosing the RTX 4070 option.

The 2nd M.2 NVMe slot in the Dell G16 is limited to M.2 2230, in my Asus F16 both slots can accept up to M.2 2280.

Unlike my Asus F16, for the A16 lineup the MIL-STD-810 testing from Asus also includes the shock resistance test. It's still just aluminum + plastic, and shock resistant doesn't mean that it will survive when you throw it off of a balcony onto the concrete parking lot, but it's fairly tough (or TUF).

Both the Asus F16 and the Asus A16 have a tad more battery capacity than the Dell G16.

I could go on, but think I got the message across that I lean away from Dell. Run away from them actually. lol

At the time when (also in your other thread) I told you that the Asus A16 with AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX CPU was on sale at $1100 on Amazon (sold by Amazon and shipped by Amazon, which is still preferred over Newegg by many who live in the U.S. due to less finicking AFAIK if you need your money back, etc. or please correct me if I got this all wrong), you should've bit the bullet immediately IMHO.

This specific CPU model from AMD has an 18% higher rating than the Intel Core i9-14900HX according to PassMark. Upgrading the RAM to 32GB (2x16GB @5600MHz, which will be downclocked to 5200MHz in the A16 laptop) from Crucial costs $81 on Amazon.

4GB is enough to meet Microsoft requirements for W11 and works fine for me. I don't think 16GB is too little! But if I were buying today I would go for 8GB with the option of adding RAM later if necessary.

@Hazel123 @TraderGary @badrobot Ok my wonderful helpers and educators, and anybody else who wants to chime in. For those of you familiar with any of the below items, if you had to pick from one of these 4 sets of configurations (no particular order) (no mixing or or swapping this for that) which would it be, humor me and help me out here and feel free to tell me pros or cons. I've been reading about them but not sure nor as familiar, as likely many of you are. Or list your first to least preferred set if you like (for my use), and your feed back may confirm which one I'm leaning toward:
