OS
Windows 11 Pro 24H2 26100.3775
So I downloaded 24H2 ISO file, made it bootable on USB flash, I run setup.exe, all is going fine, but when the blue screen comes, and before restarting PC, at around 30% it exits the screen, and I get the message that Windows 11 has failed to install. How to fix that? I tried some solutions about clearing the updates, registry, but still the same problem, and I can't do a clean install, have so many movies and games on C partition, so I want to perform an upgrade.

Why do you feel the need for 24H2? Any 24H2 ISO you could have downloaded would be an Insiders build, which one did you get?

With so many movies and games on my Windows C: drive I wouldn't want to risk it all by upgrading to an Insider build. Why such a rush to get 24H2? The RTM build of W11 23H2 will in due course get offered the feature update to 24H2 once it is released to the General Availability channel. That is expected to be some time in September/October - after the bugs have (hopefully) been ironed out by the Insider testing.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

The official release date for Windows 11 version 24H2 is expected to be in October 2024.
Currently, it is available in the Release Preview Channel for users who want to try it out ahead of the general availability.
I assume that you are enrolled in the Insider Release Preview channel. If you aren't,
just enroll in the Windows Insider Release Preview channel.
Join the Windows Insider Program: Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
after that, upgrade from Windows 11 23H2 to 24H2 without losing your data and files.

I doubt that there is a generic answer.

I've done the switch, using a 26100-712 ISO from uupdump.net. It has since been updated using Windows Update, even though I'm not in the Insider program.

At a guess, you may have some minor corruption in your 22631 installation. I'd start by running "sfc/ scannow" (without the quotes; System File Checker) from a command prompt. with admin privileges.

If that doesn't work, I suggest repair the Windows image with DISM. (The link is for Windows 10, but the procedure is the same for 11.) Then rerun SFC.

And if that doesn't work, maybe a repair install of 22631.

If that doesn't help, all that I can suggest is waiting for the public release of 24H2, or joining the Insider release preview channel (as suggested by "godsey786"). I hope that'd proceed. If not, you'd need to do a clean install. Re-installing a lot of games would be painful, of course.

I strongly recommend imaging you OS drive before proceeding. After the 10 day reversion period, you won't be able to go back to 23H2 without restoring an image. You can't install 23H2 as an "upgrade" over 24H2.

The thing is, first, I joined the Insider program, but I chose the beta channel, which was a mistake, and after that it offered me through the update windows 23H2 repair version, which I didn't want. So I installed it, and after restarting the pc, it would show as installed, but will still start to download that file, and install again and again, cannot get rid of it, even tho I exit the Insider program, which is why I wanted the other way to install 24H2, so I would have normal updates again. I tried all the suggested steps for clearing the updates, but still the same thing with downloading 23H2 repair version, annoying.

I can't do a clean install

Never say never because you may eat your words at some point. There's only one thing I can guarantee 100%, and it's that if you use a computer long enough, sooner or later your system will crash, or your files will get corrupted, or your hardware will fail, or you'll get stuck in one version and build. If one's data is important to him, he should never go into an upgrade even in release version, let alone one of the insider builds, without making an image of his system or at least a backup of his personal data. It a computer. Stuff happens.

Well, but that build is RTM, the version that will be made public in October, so nothing risky, Microsoft always released RTM versions around May through the years, and those were available in a couple of months officially, the exact same versions.
