As of September 2024, Nick Sills stepped down as CEO of Macrium Software. He continues to be involved with the company, focusing on innovation and maintaining its technical excellence. Dave Joyce, who joined Macrium as COO in 2023, succeeded him as CEO.
As of April 2025, Nicholas David Sills remains the majority owner of Paramount Software UK Ltd, holding at least 75% of the company's shares.

Interesting - sounds like some people invested on basis of improving profitability. Either way, new CEO is changing company focus.

Hasleo have admitted already this is planned and there is no guarantee the free version would necessarily have all the same features as at the moment.

It depends on how much you value your DATA - often it's far nore valuable than the hardware its on -- and of course SECURITY aspects so you can avoid Identity theft / other scams.

There's really 3 issues here :

1) System / OS backup -- any imaging tool will do so long as it's reliable -- and these days on decent hardware if you don't have a load of apps with various licenses etc - re-installing again doesn't take long so in some cases it's possibly not even worth while about bothering to do this any more

2) Archive stuff -- this means data you want to keep but doesn't change -- e.g multi-media files, old emails, old documents e.g legal stuff etc whether scanned or in text form, DVD and CD rips etc etc. Back this up with ANYTHING - even file explorer to 2X different devices - it only needs to be done once.

3) Data backup - this is data that changes and you might want to keep several versions - usually 3 is sufficient - but of course it's YOUR data so only you know the value of it. This is where you do need a 100% reliable backup tool -- and if you think MR is worth it then go for it -- but anything MUST BE RELIABLE.

Too many people take a backup, get a zero return code or message saying xxx completed successfully but never try to RESTORE it as a test and then complain all over the net that they've lost valuable data. One successful strategy especially with cheap cloud storage is also to keep really critical data on the cloud as well so you can always get it back - OK Ms etc has been known to be offline - but that happens so rarely as can be considered negligible risk.

So there's no "One size fits all" here - I think an appropriate Brit expression is "Horses for Courses". But whatever route you go down ensure if you take any sort of backup you TEST a restore from time to time.

I did a search on Amazon when I got home and because I have Amazon Prime I can watch it for free. Too many distraction tonight so I'll try to watch it tomorrow.

Did they change the name in Australia? I know that happens sometimes. My example of Secret Agent Man is one example. It was a British TV show called Danger Man. In the US it was called Secret Agent Man. Once my memory of this show was brought to mind I ordered it from Amazon so I could add it to my streaming collection. While I was at it, I included the TV show called The Prisoner in my order. I'm a classic TV show/movie fanatic. I don't know for sure but at 69 years old maybe I'm trying to relive my younger years by watching the TV shows and movies I grew up with.

Of course Hasleo Backup will eventually put a retail price on the programme - whether it's a one-off such as Macrium was, or an annual licensing cost as Macrium has become, is not yet clear. My guess would be the latter. AOMEI are still offering a lifetime updateable programme for multi-use off the same router address, ie. home use) for about US$90.

But the current freeware version of Hasleo works well. Licensing future versions won't affect that (unless the current version has sunset line coding in it). Similarly, Macrium v 8.1 (bought) works irrespective of the change to annual licensing for newer versions. Only MS Win11 updates can break this, it seems to me. Win12 is out of sight, thankfully.

Recent updates to Hasleo have added an option similar in function to Macrium 8.1. This is an ability to edit a backup file once it's been mounted. I've tested this edit and it works - to a point. Like Macrium, one can edit a mounted backup file as extensively as one may, but the edits are not saveable. That is, the edited backup file reverts to it's original state on exiting the edit function.

So my question: has anyone found a practical use for this option ?

All current versions have a time bomb in them. If you don't update your software in a timely manner, the current version will stop working. This is not a phone home thing, it is a real time bomb. When it goes PAID (not anticipated in the near future), I'm sure it will be removed.

Agreed. I was simply too slow to realise that.

Seems limited real world opportunities but yes, it has some obvious potential. So thanks for answering my question. It does add another tool to the backup/restore suite.

I, as well as many users on the Hasleo Forum, have brought this up to the Devs when older versions we are using... stop working. When the Time Bomb is reached and you try and start the application... the message says you must update your version in order to continue, then the application EXITs out.

If you wish real in-your-face proof... just continue to use your current version (without updating) until you get the message.

Edit: The EMERGENCY DISK version (Recovery Media) does not contain this time bomb...
