How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2)

Just did an in-place upgrade from the latest ISO, my PC is definitely unsupported hardware. Going through things now but seems mostly fine so far.

I may clean install my GPU driver just to be safe.

In-place upgrade went smoothly without any workarounds for incompatibility (other than originally done installing Windows 11).

Addendum: if you click check for updates Windows Update will install it, but it won't appear as a feature update in Update History. If you want it in Update History, then set the target release version and wait for Windows Update to make it's own automatic check (that will happen within 24 hours).

I did it. I'm now on 26100.1882 on RPreview. I had to unenroll Insiders, reboot, and enroll Insiders again, but on RPreview. Then after a few minutes, 24H2 showed up. It seems everything is ok, although I didn't run Scan fc or Dism at all.

Congratulations, thanks for telling us how you did it.

There is a known issue with SFC /ScanNow in 26100.1882. Every time you run it it says it has found and fixed files, no matter how many times you run it. It doesn't seem to affect anything though.

Had to roll back to 23H2 due to getting multiple critical_process_died BSODs within a single hour after I got drivers and commonly used apps installed.

I downloaded the ISO directly and used Ventoy to create a bootable USB drive to install it with.

My advice -- unless it is offered to you, I would not install 24H2 at this time. Let MS fix it as it still has issues.

My understanding is, from reading the following document: To use ReFS you would have to use Windows Server Catalog certified hardware. As stated by Microsoft

You can also use ReFS on a dev drive, but that only makes sense if you’re a developer.

The very idea, of burning an ISO to a DVD these days, since most new PC's don't even have a DVD player, is as archaic as the hand crank on the family car. We're not installing Windows 98 or XP here, after all!!!

Today, 2024, the most acceptable, and easiest, method of preparing a Bootable ISO is to:
First download your ISO from a reputable site. Not necessarily MS.
Then using Rufus, burn the ISO to a Flash Drive of appropriate size. And, take all the Rufus options, to bypass all the MS BS.
Then boot up the PC with the Flash Drive and install the new OS to a new SSD.
Just to be safe, remove your old OS drive, with all your Stuff on it and set it aside. Then you can just re-install it, if you want to go back to your previous OS.

My last install of 24H2 took only ten minutes, and it was 99% Automatic. Then just a few minutes of tweaking, and it was time to install all my favorite programs, browsers, etc. The entire process took less than an hour.

I don't understand all the hoop-la about 24H2, except that it's NEW. My 24H2 runs just like my 23H2 or even my 22H2. Nothing special!!!
So if I didn't already have it, like for six months or so, I might just say "Forgetaboutit!"
And yes, I still have both of those previous builds on Separate SSD's.

A few days ago, I found an old HD that I had mostly forgotten about, and when I plugged it in to my Shop PC and booted it up, I was amazed to find it has Windows 8.1/Pro/64 on it. And I had also forgotten just how nice of an OS that was. Kind'a makes me question why I ever stopped using such a nice OS. ??? It must have been that urge to have the latest and greatest! Eh? That's been the downfall of many a poor boy.

Isn't that why you can (should) use a thumb drive???

I can't remember the last time I burned an ISO file to CD.... and I have a PC with two CD drives. Also, an external CD drive. Still use thumb drives for ISO's. Far more convenient.

Thanks for the advice man. Just a quick question. . Did you try it on a desktop or a laptop?

I have a DVD ROM drive (It's a Blu-Ray Burner) and I may use it once a year. Everything has went digital. I've thought about selling it, but I decided not to because I don't know if I'll ever need it or not.

I have DVD-ROM too, and I'm run out of dvd-r disc. I only install stable releases of Windows 11 (Not IP builds - all the builds channels play with us with new features), so one disk on key is enough for me.

I updated my 3 regular use PC's to 24H2. One because it was offered the other, 2 via the ISO. No big problems, no lost programs that I'm aware of, but then I'm not a power user or gamer. My only issue was loss of network access from 24H2 to 23H2 . Before moving to 24H2 on my LT, I fixed the network issue with the solution shown here on network issues. "Enable Insecure Guest Logins"
FYI after installing the latest 24H2 from the new ISO, there was another cumulative update KB5043178 when I searched.
