Win Update KB5041571 Windows 11 Cumulative Update build 26100.1457 (24H2) on Copilot+ PCs - Aug. 13

UPDATE 8/27:

  Microsoft Support:

August 13, 2024 - KB5041571 (OS Build 26100.1457)

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 is targeting Copilot+ PCs devices and devices that were previously using Windows Insider 24H2 builds.

Highlights

  • This update addresses security issues for your Windows operating system.

Improvements

This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5040529 (released July 23, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Lock screen] This update addresses CVE-2024-38143. Because of this, the “Use my windows user account” check box is not available on the lock screen to connect to Wi-Fi.
  • [NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse] This update removes this registry key. For more information refer to KB5020276—Netjoin: Domain join hardening changes.
  • [Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) and Linux Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)] This update applies SBAT to systems that run Windows. This stops vulnerable Linux EFI (Shim bootloaders) from running. This SBAT update will not apply to systems that dual-boot Windows and Linux. After the SBAT update is applied, older Linux ISO images might not boot. If this occurs, work with your Linux vendor to get an updated ISO image.
  • [Domain Name System (DNS)] This update hardens DNS server security to address CVE-2024-37968. If the configurations of your domains are not up to date, you might get the SERVFAIL error or time out.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the August 2024 Security Updates.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5041575)- 26100.1440

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Yes (Windows Update)None. This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update and Microsoft Update.
Yes (MSU)To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Yes (MSU)To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

If you get the patch that's the gold version build, you do not have to do anything - you'll already be on the final version.

All other Windows Insiders will have to upgrade via ISO.
23H2 will upgrade to 24H2 via Windows Update? That's how I got mine on RP.
From there 24H2 will get patched as normal.
I have since done a repair install using the ISO but the initial upgrade was through WU. It will only appear if the PC meets the system requirements

A very quick update for me, although it required two restarts which is unusual.

Anyone know why under Windows Updates > View update history, I am not seeing 24H2 listed as being installed under Feature Updates?

It only shows Windows 11 23H2, installed in September 2023. Is this the same for everyone else on the Release Preview? I've only ever been in the Release Preview by the way since I got my new PC in December 2022 with Windows 11 22H2 pre-installed.

Update History only records those updates installed through Windows Update. So if you upgraded using an ISO it wouldn't be in the list. My 24H2 update was via Windows Update and is recorded as such (the second install of 23H2 was when I switched from the RTM build to the Insider RP channel).

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

N00b, so hi! Ran into a problem with this update. Tried all the usual things such as dism, sfc etc to no avail. Then I looked into the event log and saw that TiWorker.exe is faulting with a memory access violation. I gather TiWorker is involved in the Update rabbit warren. Here's the log:

Are you overclocking anything? Try resetting everything to defaults and then restart the update.

I use this machine for C++ dev to support customers already on 24H2 and those that soon will be, so everything is completely standard. Visual Studio is almost the only extra application installed. I suspect I will have to reinstall the OS. argh

You could try the following commands to repair windows in an elevated command prompt (right click on start click Terminal (admin)):

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

Also you could try an "in place" upgrade. That is, grab a ISO (or windows installation media) and start the install WITHIN windows. This will repair Windows only and leave all of your files and settings intact.

Wiping Windows should be a last resort IMHO.

I've been down this update hole before... so i had a comprehensive script at the ready.

SC config trustedinstaller start=auto
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop msiserver
net stop cryptsvc
net stop appidsvc
Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
regsvr32.exe /s atl.dll
regsvr32.exe /s urlmon.dll
regsvr32.exe /s mshtml.dll
netsh winsock reset
netsh winsock reset proxy

dism /Online /Cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup
Sfc /ScanNow
net start bits
net start wuauserv

pause

I'll try the in-place thing. Thanks!

Update History only records those updates installed through Windows Update. So if you upgraded using an ISO it wouldn't be in the list. My 24H2 update was via Windows Update and is recorded as such (the second install of 23H2 was when I switched from the RTM build to the Insider RP channel).

View attachment 104790

I have only ever installed updates via Windows Update, including 24H2. Windows 11 22H2 was already pre-installed on my PC when I got it from PCSpecialist here in the UK in December 2022. I have never installed anything for this PC via an ISO. Must be a bug specific to my system then as I only see Windows 11 23H2 listed under Feature Updates although all the cumulative updates for 24H2 are listed elsewhere.

Glad to hear that you haven't manufactured a curiosity. People do the damnedest things online.

I'll await the explanation, if one can be found. Not that I expect it to be life-altering.
Just had another Google, another person has the same build number as me on Enterprise.

Was a bug fixed in 1457 that closed apps that used more memory and CPU? Apparently it seems that way

Per MS, I'm not on the insider list, (may have been xx years ago) and I'm happy with W11 23H2.
However, I have this message in my updates section.

I plan to wait until a public version is available - mostly since 24H2 lists the "New Outlook" as a must and I don't like it compared to my old (current) version. Is there any easy way to continue with just 23H2 updates?

Thanks

That's strange, I have 24H2 Insider Dev on other disk but not getting any offer on 23H2.

Thanks, Shawn. I guess it's 2:38 PM in California, so it's not that strange of a time to offer an update.
