Insider KB5052080 Windows 11 Insider Beta and Dev build 26120.3291 (24H2) - Feb. 21

 Windows Blogs:

Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3291 (KB5052080) to the Dev and Beta Channels.

The update includes two improvements for Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs:
  • We are previewing the ability to use improved Windows Search to find files saved in the cloud directly from the Windows search box on the taskbar with Windows Insiders with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.
  • This update improves your Recall (Preview) experience and as a result, your previous snapshots were deleted. After installing this build, Recall will continue to save new snapshots normally going forward only if you have the option to save snapshots turned on in Settings.
As a reminder – we’re also offering the same Dev Channel updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel. These updates will be optional at first, so if you are in the Beta Channel today, you can upgrade when you are ready to do so. We plan to make these updates recommended later this year, which means you will eventually get upgraded to 24H2-based updates automatically in the Beta Channel.

If you are an Insider in the Dev Channel, the window is open to switch from the Dev Channel to the Beta Channel if you would like. This window will only be open for as long as we’re releasing the same 24H2-based updates (same build numbers) across both the Dev and Beta Channels. When the Dev Channel jumps ahead (higher build numbers), the window to switch will close.

IMPORTANT: This window is closing soon, so we highly encourage you to evaluate which channel you would like to be in during this time in which the window to switch is still open.

New Copilot+ PC experiences

Find photos saved in the cloud via the Windows search box with improved Windows Search

We are excited to extend support for finding photos saved in the cloud with improved Windows Search to the Windows search box on the taskbar. Just use your own words to find photos stored and saved in the cloud by describing what they are about like “European castles” or “summer picnics” in the search box on your taskbar. In addition to photos stored locally on your Copilot+ PC, photos from the cloud will now show up in the search results together. In addition to searching for photos, exact matches for your keywords within the text of your cloud files will show in the search results.

wsb-cloud-semantic-small.webp
Results including dog on beach photos from the cloud in the Windows search box on the taskbar with improved Windows Search.

You can try this experience out today with your personal OneDrive when signed in with your Microsoft account and connected to the internet. If you are signed into OneDrive with a work or school account (Entra ID), you will only see matches for keywords you are searching for within the text of your cloud files in the search results – not photos. Third-party cloud providers will be able to support this experience with their services as well, with documentation coming soon.

We’re excited to introduce a new way to find your cloud content in Windows and will continue improving search results and capabilities over time. The improved Windows Search experiences continue to gradually roll out to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, including finding photos saved in the cloud, so you may not see these experiences right away. Some of these improved Windows Search experiences are not yet available in all regions, with expanded availability coming over time. Support for AMD and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs is coming soon. See here for more details.

NOTE: For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

You can learn more about semantic search on Copilot + PCs here.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Desktop Environment > Search.

Changes and Improvements gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Recall (Preview)]

Recall is currently available in preview for Windows Insiders on Windows 11, version 24H2 in the Dev and Beta Channels on Copilot+ PCs.

  • [IMPORTANT] As mentioned last week, this update improves your Recall experience and as a result, your previous snapshots were deleted. After installing this build, Recall will continue to save new snapshots normally going forward only if you have the option to save snapshots turned on in Settings.

[Other]

  • As part of the deprecation and removal of Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT), this build includes several changes that direct MSDT troubleshooter links in Control Panel to Settings > System > Troubleshoot.

Fixes gradually being rolled out to the Dev Channel with toggle on*

[Live captions & real-time translation]

The following fixes are rolling out for live captions and real-time translation on Copilot+ PCs:
  • Fixed the issue where you might see a crash on first launch of live captions.
  • Fixed the issue where if audio is playing or the microphone is enabled, switching languages will crash live captions.

[File Explorer]

  • Fixed a few issues impacting File Explorer reliability for Insiders.
  • Fixed an issue where opening File Explorer from the command line may result in the address bar being empty and not displaying the current path.
  • Fixed an issue where you couldn’t select multiple files in the Recommended section of Home by holding Shift and clicking the files.

[Power & Battery]

[Graphics]

  • Fixed an issue which could cause color profiles to not load correctly after waking your PC from sleep.

[Remote Desktop]

  • Fixed an issue where Remote Desktop wouldn’t use UDP, only TCP.

Known issues

[General]

  • After you do a PC reset under Settings > System > Recovery, your build version may incorrectly show as Build 26100 instead of Build 26120. This will not prevent you from getting future Dev Channel updates which will resolve this issue.

[Recall]

  • [REMINDER] Make sure you update Microsoft 365 apps to the latest version so you can jump back into specific documents.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • Some Insiders may experience an issue where Recall is unable to automatically save snapshots, and the setting can’t be turned on in Settings. We’re working on a fix for this issue.
  • Recall can be enabled or disabled from “Turn Windows features on or off”. We are caching the Recall binaries on disk while we test add/remove. In a future update we will completely remove the binaries.
  • Some users may see a message to “Make sure Recall is saving snapshots”, while the Settings page for Recall shows saving snapshots is enabled. Reboot your device to resolve this issue.

[Click to Do]

  • [REMINDER] If any of your actions on image entities are no longer appearing, please ensure you have the latest updates for the Photos and Paint app from the Microsoft Store.
  • [REMINDER] The intelligent text actions leverage the power of Microsoft’s secure cloud to improve your text results by ensuring prompts and responses are safe and appropriate. This data is automatically deleted. Local moderation to ensure the safety of prompts and responses will be added in the future, replacing this cloud endpoint.
The following known issues will be fixed in future updates to Windows Insiders:
  • Sometimes additional context is given when using more intelligent text actions powered by Phi Silica.

[Improved Windows Search]

  • [REMINDER] For improved Windows Search on Copilot+ PCs, it is recommended that you plug in your Copilot+ PC for the initial search indexing to get completed. You can check your search indexing status under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

[File Explorer]

  • We’re working on the fix for an issue causing File Explorer to be very slow to close for some Insiders when closing using the X button. This may also have an impact on the other title bar buttons.

Snipping Tool (version 11.2501.7.0)

We are rolling out an update for Snipping Tool to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels that introduces trim! With trim, you can adjust the start and end times of your screen recordings to cut out any unnecessary video snippets from your video.

New trim capability for screen recordings in Snipping Tool.
New trim capability for screen recordings in Snipping Tool.

To get started, record a new screen recording with Snipping Tool. Open the recording in the app and select the new Trim button at the top of the window to enter the trim feature. Use the grabbers to move and select new timepoints for the start and end times of your screen recording. Press the Apply or Cancel button to save or discard your changes. You can also re-enter trim to undo or adjust any trimmed portions.

FEEDBACK: Please file feedback in Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Snipping Tool.

Reminders for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel

  • Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel receive updates based on Windows 11, version 24H2 via an enablement package (Build 26120.xxxx). UPDATE: If you are in the Beta Channel, these updates are currently offered to you as an optional upgrade, and you can upgrade when you are ready to do so. We plan to make these updates recommended in the Beta Channel later this year, which means you will eventually get upgraded to 24H2-based updates automatically.
  • Updates delivered to the Dev Channel are in a format that offers a preview of enhancements to servicing technology on Windows 11, version 24H2. To learn more, see Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates | Windows IT Pro Blog.
  • Many features in the Dev Channel are rolled out using Control Feature Rollout technology, starting with a subset of Insiders and ramping up over time as we monitor feedback to see how they land before pushing them out to everyone in this channel.
  • For Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel who want to be the first to get features gradually rolled out to you, you can turn ON the toggle to get the latest updates as they are available via Settings > Windows Update*. Over time, we will increase the rollouts of features to everyone with the toggle turned on. Should you keep this toggle off, new features will gradually be rolled out to your PC over time once they are ready.
  • Features and experiences included in these builds may never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback. Features may change over time, be removed, or replaced and never get released beyond Windows Insiders. Some of these features and experiences could show up in future Windows releases when they’re ready.
  • Some features in active development we preview with Windows Insiders may not be fully localized and localization will happen over time as features are finalized. As you see issues with localization in your language, please report those issues to us via Feedback Hub.
  • Please note that some accessibility features may not work with features like Recall and Click to Do while in preview with Windows Insiders.
  • Because the Dev and Beta Channels represent parallel development paths from our engineers, there may be cases where features and experiences show up in the Beta Channel first.
  • Check out Flight Hub for a complete look at what build is in which Insider channel.
Thanks,
Amanda & Brandon

I was seeing errors trying to run sfc in powershell preview 7.6 but once I used the release version the errors stopped.
Without showing the CBS.log when it failed the 1st time you ran it, you cannot tell if the sfc errors were already repaired on the 1st pass. 😎🤷‍♂️

7.6 was having issues with multiple program files that prevented it from running but when the regular version ran it did not produce any errors and could complete the scan without issue.

@fg2001gf11F - No idea but here is what's interesting.... /checkhealth and /scanhealth has the error 87 in Command Prompt but works fine in Powershell.
/restorehealth finally worked in command prompt but was stuck at 62.3% for close to an hour. So it seems to be adding a space or something to the first two. So either the problem is with command prompt or windows terminal as windows terminal was updated yesterday to v1.22.10352.0. These are done after the /restorehealth

Not sure if that is really a H or some ctrl character since you can see after the Error: 87, it seems to indicate it's a space as it's "scanhealth "option but why it does that only to /CheckHealth and /ScanHealth and not /RestoreHealth is a mystery.
Maybe the first /RestoreHealth really went out to rebuild the component store. I will try /SdanHealth and /CheckHealth after my next reboot to see if it makes a difference.

Looks like I got the reclaimable packages down to 2 from the previous low of 3 for 24H2 Beta builds...

Updated without issues unless mentioned below:
1740292134992.webp

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) not updated as it's v26100.3180 updated by v26120.3281 Beta which is the case with both Windows Updated from v26120.3281 and a in-place repair install of v26120.3291.

The following all passed without any complaints unless noted:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Both of the above has an error 87 as noted in previous posts while using Command Prompt but worked fine with PowerShell
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Dism /online /cleanup-image /analyzecomponentstore
Dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

As noted previously, for Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3073 Beta, 26120.3281 Beta, 26120.3291 Beta - the DISM for for /ScanHealth and /RestoreHealth seems to be faster compared to 23H2, /CheckHealth is always instant.
As @asturias7 mentioned that 24H2 Build 26120.3073 Beta broke Intel Bluetooth and Realtek Audio, my Intel Bluetooth is working fine as I just tried my Bluetooth Wireless Cambridge Audio Melomania Touch True Wireless Headphones and they worked fine. This is on an Intel AX210 WiFi 6E/Bluetooth v5.3 on WiFi Drivers v23.120.0.3 and Bluetooth Drivers v23.120.0.4.

For the Realtek Audio,
The following configuration worked fine in Windows 11 23H2 Build 22635.4870 Beta:
Realtek UAD Audio Driver v6.0.9768.1
Realtek ASIO Component v1.0.13.1
Realtek Audio Effects Component (APO1) v13.0.6000.1505 for Hardware ID: SWC\VEN_10EC&AID_0001 - Windows 11
Realtek Audio Universal Service v1.0.821.8
Realtek Hardware Support Application v11.0.6000.355
Realtek Audio Console v1.52.354.0

but there is no sound on Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3073 Beta

I had to downgrade to:
Realtek Audio Effects Component (APO1) v13.1.6000.1076 for Hardware ID: SWC\VEN_10EC&AID_0001 - Windows 11 before sound was working again.

Same issue even if I used a older Realtek UAD Audio Driver.

I did uninstall and removed all drivers and used Dell's Realtek UAD Audio Driver v6.0.8991 which worked and then updated all the components to the versions above. The Realtek Audio Effects Component was already on v13.1.6000.1076
which worked until it was replaced with the newer v13.0.6000.1505 when the sound stopped working, then rolling back to v13.1.6000.1076 worked again. This is on a Dell XPS 15 9570 notebook computer.

I should also mention when there is no sound, it also made Fxsound unresponsive and when I restart the computer when the sound was not working, it also was stuck oņa endless restart on the screen so it seems like it was hanging all the processes on the computer as a whole.

With Realtek Audio UAD 6.0.9780.1 drivers, Realtek Audio Effects Component (APO1) v13.0.6000.1505 for Hardware ID: SWC\VEN_10EC&AID_0001 - Windows 11 works for sound output but the mic does not work while v13.1.6000.1076 works fine under Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3073 Beta. APO v13.1 did work fine with the mic under Windows 11 23H2 Beta Build 22635.4870. Same thing with Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3281 Beta. Realtek UAD Audio Driver v6.0.9785.1 drivers with Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3281 Beta has the exact same results as Realtek Audio UAD 6.0.9780.1 drivers. Realtek Audio Console v1.52.356.0 works fine with Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3281 Beta. Same exact results with Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3291 Beta.

Just like Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3073 Beta/26120.3281 Beta and 26120.3291 Beta compared to 23H2 Build 22635.4870 Beta as well as 23H2 Builds in general:
1) It takes a lot longer to load all the startup items
2) CPU % usage is higher

@Almighty1 ,
There were several repairable components that were fixed by RESTOREHEALTH, but on my machines it was sitting at 62.3% not more than 10 minutes, I never had to wait an hour. 🤷‍♂️
Also, I never had a problem running those DISM commands from command prompt or PowerShell. I rarely use Terminal, but I can give it a try. 😎
That added "?" after the dism option seems to indicate that some unicode character was added to your line.
It shows in your dism.log as question mark after the letter H. It would be interesting to find what is causing that extra character. 😎

I forgot to include another part, in the last and most recent entry here:
It's basically doing the offline fix for the 6824 Error. Replace /Online with /Image:C:\ but the guy didn't say it had to be done offline as it obviously didn't work while still online. Had to boot offline and command prompt where:
CHECKHEALTH and SCANHEALTH both completed successfully but with Component Store is repairable.
RESTOREHEALTH did not work as it said source file not found.
so the first restore health after rebooting was probably to fix the component store as remember the original restorehealth also was a error 87.
Well, Terminal loads PowerShell and also one can launch command prompt from there as it's usually right click on start menu and then Terminal (Admin) which will launch PS and then you can launch the other stuff like command prompt from there.
How are you actually launching powershell and command prompt if you don't use terminal? I didn't add any characters as it's from my text file that I copy and paste. Typing it works fine though. Maybe the copy is not 100% working as the clipboard will work and then stop working in the non 23H2 builds.
Actually, I always leave that txt file opened in notepad so when I login, I open notepad and the tab with that file is in it. So it appears that notepad either corrupted the line or something because if I copy the line except the last letter, h and type the h manually, copying it back to notepad first and then copy from notepad, it works. Thanks for the tip!

And maybe it was always that way, before I always copied the line with the space after the h at the end and it would give the 87 error so I always copied it with the space and pasted it but delete the space. This time as in earlier, I copied it to the h only so maybe there is some invisible character at the end.

@fg2001gf11F - Works fine now... the original dism lines were all copied and pasted from one of the older Beta Insiders posts into notepad which was probably 2 years ago... so probably there was some invisible character after the h which I didn't see as I usually copy with that blank space and then bacspace back to the h.

Looks like you have a typo, should be 26120.3291. And 26120.3281.

On one of the machines that had problems updating I used the recovery option with W.U. repair version instead of using an ISO.
Pretty slow, but that worked, and after that the SCANHEALTH did not find any repairable component.
3 machines with this update had 3 different results. 2 of them had to use RESTOREHEALTH to repair the components found by SCANHEALTH. 🤷‍♂️

You are right... I typed without looking and the 2 was in the wrong place. I didn't have any problems updating, I just never did a in-place repair install since a few months ago with 23H2 Beta. How exactly do you do the recovery option with WU repair version?

You know. But there are people that never check these readings and their PC are running just fine. I never did this with Win 7 nor Win 10 and they always ran great. Are we being overly cautious? Are we exaggerating? I can't see doing this on every single Insider build. That's once or twice a week and that's a lot of time spent on checking and rechecking. Then if it's not perfect, reinstall, download iso, create UUP Dump ISO, installing and reinstalling... etc, etc. This is a lot of wasted time. Could be why a lot of people are switching to Linux.

I did the install using UUPDUMP iso and it worked. I now run dism without difficulty and no errors!
My DISM never had errors as it seems it was my paste from the copy my notepad txt file that had some character after the h from the word Health in /ScanHealth, /CheckHealth, /RestoreHealth that was causing the Error 87 as @fg2001gf11F pointed out with many thanks to him.

I think you are correct. I didn't do this until I joined the insider group and the TenForum and ElevenForum. The fact that as an Insider and we are dealing with experimental builds makes me think this is a good practice. Who knows??? BTW, when I am too busy to do these checks, they don't get done!

What's funny is I don't do the sfc /scannow and DISM stuff on the Canary build running as a VM under Hyper-V on Beta. I noticed something interesting with the VM too. Downloading and everything is fast but Microsoft Store and Windows Update seems to be way slower compared to the host.

You are right... I typed without looking and the 2 was in the wrong place. I didn't have any problems updating, I just never did a in-place repair install since a few months ago with 23H2 Beta. How exactly do you do the recovery option with WU repair version?
@Almighty1,

This is the recovery option that downloads the Repair version with W.U. and reinstalls, similar as an update/repair in place that you do with ISO. 😉
