Just updated my HP Elitebook G3 to 24H2 from 23H2. First time using Rufus and everything worked with no problems. Very impressed (and relieved!).

Rufus 4.5 or earlier versions don't work for 24H2, only newer versions 4.6
Running Setup presents you the familiar screen to upgrade or do a new installation. Running Setupprep skips that screen and goes directly to upgrade, if I remember correctly. They should work the same, I prefer running the "regular" Setup and then choose to upgrade.

The difference is that the second upgrades directly without giving you any choice, while the first gives you the choice to upgrade or restart to do a new installation.

Yes, anywhere. The only requirement is that the folder contains the sub-folder(s) for the language(s) (en-GB, en-US, etc.).

Do you have a 23H2 machine to copy them from? If not, do you have an ISO for 23H2 (or earlier)? You can mount the ISO and extract the files/folders for Wordpad from the install.esd/install.wim using 7-Zip File Manager.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

Hmm. This suggests that at some point they are going to remove the old option. Is there still the option to select repair my computer - eg if you want to install a system image? I can't remember now as already installed.

Thanks Bree. Yes my main laptop is still on 23H2. It was a laptop going to someone else I was installing 24H2 on. I will copy those files now though, for the future. So could you just have the folder saved in Documents for example? Or would it need to be in Windows C somewhere? I assume you names the folder "Old Programs" yourself? So you created the folder in C-Programs and added the files into it - is that right? The mousepad settled down but I did have to increase the pointer speed a lot.

Because it was a new install for someone else and I didn't want to go through setting up the browser :-)

So - when I copied them and then pasted into a folder on my "tools" usb, the files came out in a different order :unsure: Does this matter? Seems strange.

I don't know if you didn't see my reply on another thread. Download WinAero's installer on your normal PC, extract the ZIP file. Inside is a small .EXE and copy that to USB. Plug the USB into the refurbed PC, and run the EXE.

It's self-contained and doesn't disturb the user's profile, other than creating a WordPad shortcut on the desktop.

Hi yes I can see it's downloadable from Winaero but the computer is going to someone else, so I didn't want to set up the browser and go online :-) Also Bree's way seems very simple, if you have the files - which I do. But I can see if you want it installed so it appears under uninstall in the apps list, the Winaero way may be a good option.

You're missing the simple point. The EXE installer is portable, copy it to your personal USB drive and plug into the other PC. No browser access is required since you already have a copy of the installer to run locally. Or leave a copy of the EXE on a local C:\ folder, so the user can decide if they want to run the installer themselves.

Sergei from WinAero is very diligent when repacking the original files, their dependencies and whatever reg settings are required. He even includes MUI's for all the available languages.

No need to setup any browser. Just download it from your own computer and install it on the target computer. You don't even need internet connection. Since you are visiting Winaero's site, you may also download old calculator (to replace the modern huge and ugly app with the familiar calculator from Windows 7). You can install the classic games (Solitaire, Mivesweeper etc), you can install the "legacy" Microsoft Paint (if you don't like the modern interface) and others. Also instead of fiddling with the Registry directly, you can download Winaero Tweaker to easily change any setting you like.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. Seemed the most appropriate place to put them, but you could put the folder anywhere you like.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

    My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 8GB RAM, 256GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro RTM and Insider Dev, Beta, and RP 24H2 as native boot vhdx.

Yes, I've got all those XP game too - plus XP Mahjong and 3D Pinball. All run well in 24H2. Couldn't do without my daily fix of Solitaire :D

You wouldn't believe just how much nicer it is to play Solitaire on a touch screen. ;)
