If you boot from a recovery usb to make an image then the image will include pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys and any restore points. When you make an image from within Windows Reflect excludes all restore points and while the image will include a page file it doesn't back up any of its data.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. I've been studying the 8.0 incremental created from USB but can't find the pagefile etc files you say it will include but they are not present.

    Incompatible Win 10 Pro PC upgraded to Win 11 Pro
I have Viboot 8.1 working with Virtualbox 7 (clone of my host OS) but it is slow as molasses (I have Hyper-V switched off).

Not sure why it is so slow - maybe a virtualbox setting - not familiar with VB.

It runs much faster when using HyperV.

I upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1.7336 just now but I will not try it until tomorrow because I have already performed a Differential earlier today.
My full backup is on Friday and then Saturday through Thursday I use Differential.

I had a little scare when I went to run v. 8.1.7387 this morning. Instead of the program loading I got a popup box. It gave me three options. Register, Restore an image, or Cancel. Reentering my key fixed the problem. I wonder if this means that the free version will eventually stop making images and only do restores.

Sounds like your v8.1 somehow lost its key and thought it was the Trial version

Unlike v8.0 Trial which reverted to v8.0 Free at the end of 30 days, the new v8.1 Trial reverts to a 'RESTORE ONLY' version. I've tested that...

Occasionally and for whatever reason, when I upgrade to the latest Dev Build, Macrium gets deactivated. It must have been deactivated when I did the repair install the other day. This was the first time I could only do a restore. I'm wondering if Macrium will eventually do an update that will change the free version to do restores only.

No, not the Reflect Free v8.0. Macrium have specifically stated that 'you can continue to use the software in perpetuity'.

How can they stop you - it works without connecting to internet. Even if they somehow timebombed it in registry, you can always boot from a usb stick.

All one would have to do is except an update. It wouldn't affect all users but anyone who allows it to update and don't have an older version to reload would be affected. When it comes to making money, I take everything a company says with a grain of salt.

The issue is more general than MR, it affects any old app for which security patches will end (or have ended)

Yes, you can use the app in perpetuity, but do you all really feel secure relying on Defender only or whatever your favorite anti-malware app is?

Specifically on MR, I myself would certainly pay up, but what do you do with some other old apps where you can't even pay up to get security patches?

With security patches and Defender, you feel like wearing pants with 2 legs (y)(y) Without security patches and Defender only, you feel like wearing pants with only 1 leg (y):eek1:
