Solved No association with .jpg files

I just tried the repair and reset as described above but it made no difference. Is Photos and Microsoft Photos the same thing?

Hi all!
Photos from microsoft is working as well here with .jpg.
Win 11 x64 .376 on I7 860/8go/2 To mother board Asus P7P55D.

I'm assuming you have Windows 11. In the list of Apps it is called Microsoft Photos. In the list of Default Apps it is called Photos. Just a bit of Microsoft inconsistency there.

The suggestion in the tutorial didn't work to solve the problem for me, however I'm good now since I installed IrFanView. Clicking on a jpg file now opens in that program.

It also appears to have more features than the default Photos app. May never know why it couldn't find anything to run with .jpg when the list of default apps showed it was tied to Photos and the repairs didn't fix anything.

In explorer the preview panel always works for Word and PDF files but never for JPGs. Anyone else seeing the same problem or have a suggestion for a fix. I find it a real pain not to see these previews. I'm using Irfanview as my JPG display.

Win11 Version 21H2 Build 22000.376 Preview pane shows .jpg images properly, Windows Photo Viewer is set as default, also works with .png, this is on my NAS drive:

Interesting to see that the default setup worked for someone. It could find nothing to use with .jpg files in my default setup, although the list of default apps showed it should have worked with Photos. At least Irfanview solved the problem for me.

I don't have an issue with Photos either. The app just works. In fact, I just finished a clean install yesterday. And Photos still works.

I don't have an issue with Photos on my computer's drive but am working on why Photos doesn't like the Pictures on my NAS drive, Windows Photo Viewer works fine with it as does Paint.

That makes no sense to me as I can view photos on my Western Digital NAS box just fine with the Photos app. These images are on my NAS drive. The drive is mapped to my PC (X-Drive).

Image asks to open with what. Here I chose "Photos"

Image shown in Photos app. Notice the address is pointing to my NAS

That said, are you mapped to your drive?

The Open With, Photos works so I think the issue is boiling down to the dark mode in Photos isn't helpful for me, still trying but on my 14" Notebook now. I will be on my Desktop with 21.5" monitor or maybe one with a 27" monitor tomorrow but both are Win10.

I don't have a clue as to why your issues, but as you can see my "Photos" app is in dark mode, as is Windows. And this is on Win 11.

Anyway, if you sort it out or figure out the issue, do tell.

Photos on Win11 is the only app running as dark. Bedtime but checking more tomorrow.

I have used Irfanview for year and was unable to associate Jpg files with it. This solution posted on Microsoft community forum worked for me.

I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.

After repair and reset I chose a jpeg file --> open with -> choose another app -> chose irfanview -> click on the square "always use this program to open .jpg files"

SOLUTION:
------------
STEP 1: If you have uninstalled Microsoft Photos, install it back.
STEP 2: Settings --> Apps --> Apps and Features --> find "Microsoft Photos" --> "Microsoft Photo", right-click on three dots [↓] --> "Advanced Options" - Go to Reset heading and click on Repair
STEP 3: You will then see the change file association button in the properties of the image file.
STEP 4: Associate the file extension to your favorite image viewer

From old to new replies. Not sure why others never found this but this solution has been there since 11/2021 on the irfanview forum. Use the registry or make the edits yourself. But this worked instantly without any hassles.
