Stop telling Linux is better than Windows and I will stop too. To even mention Linux on a Windows forum is sacrilege. If anyone dares praising Windows on Ask Ubuntu everyone is flaming him.

KVM/QEMU does use very little resources, at least on CPU side. Doing some resource monitoring atm. and gave everything this laptop has to the VM as shared resources with the host.

You remind me of my University years in the '90s. A computer room had only Unix workstations but thankfully we could run Windows 95 on a virtual machine and do our work conveniently without messing with Unix. Thanks God other computer rooms had Windows NT 4.0 which were almost identical to Windows 95 we were familiar with.

VirtualDub and VirtualDubMod may be old now, but that doesn't also mean that it can always be easily replaced with a better tool for everything a person needs/wants to achieve with it. Another excellent, "classic" example of something that also is video related, and that can produce clearly better results than anything available on Linux is madVR renderer.

Below is a great example of some guy whose video I ran across on YouTube who gave Linux a fairly reasonable shot and who, like the vast majority of PC users, came to a conclusion that is in several ways similar to (yet also in several ways different from) my own personal conclusion. I.e., Linux is still a no go for the vast majority of people who need to run specific software solutions. (Even, if these people are not complete noobs when using the PC and are more than willing enough to learn.) In very many cases it is due to having too many problems to have to tackle so they pile up until finally, these problems become the biggest showstopper or else it is due to running into a serious dead end, or dealbreaker (if not multiple dealbreakers, as that's always been my case, and I don't expect nor can see any real reason to actually even hope that this will change in a nearby future).

Never saw anybody say Linux is better than Windows in this thread. We've said many of us can use it and do what we like with it. It's an alternative, it's an option. It could be the right tool for a specific job.

Also, mentioning Linux on a Windows forum is not sacrilege. Not if it's actually a good and respectable forum. Planting your head in the sand and pretending that nothing else exists isn't an enlightening position. Also, Windows has built in tools like WSL for developers and the likes to use some of their favorite tooling under Windows. Even Microsoft themselves support, talk about it, and even use it.

@hdmi , those videos are hilarious...and long winded...

They're so heavily customizing everything that no wonder everything falls apart. They didn't even ensure the base system was working 100% reliably and properly, before customizing everything.

I've installed Arch both manually and using the archinstall script, and didn't have all these issues. Neither did I have these issues in my LFS installs.

And yeah Ubuntu falls apart and breaks every time you modify it a bit too much. Never did I see this dude solving package conflicts either...

Yeah, I use WSL for compiling and testing 3D apps and games for Linux without having to reboot over to Linux.

Conclusion: Each OS is for specific jobs. Not every OS can do everything. Linux is good for servers (security, light, can handle huge databases etc), while Windows is good for ease of use, hardware and software compatibility, multimedia and gaming. That's why it has a very large user base in common computers but small in servers. The average user doesn't need the most secure possible OS and crunching large amount of data, he needs ease of use and compatibility. So, yes, for experienced users that need something light and don't mind facing some difficulties, Linux is a good alternative, but not equal to Windows. For the novice user that wants to do his job and play without much fuss, he better stick with Windows. There should be a "try at your own risk" in any Linux recommendation.

Linux is also very good at this, except hardware drivers, which needs some work. But if you choose a common base of hardware you should not run into any issues at all.

This is old news...Windows is also very secure today and Linux does have security holes too (unless you do a super hardened Linux, which is very difficult to achieve), just as both Windows and MacOS does too.

I agree with almost 100% with your comments - I've had experience especially from a lot of "Off shored I.T specialists -- from Asia in particular -- Bangalore is the most common city where these people seem to crawl from under the stones" where they can "Blind you with Science - they probably can tell you what "Bit 27 on the most obscure block on a part of the OS does", but have ZERO practical help when it actually comes to mending anything !!. I think the User you are referring to -- might not come from there but is definitely in the same school -- he posts loads of what for most users of any OS is essentially 99% incomprehensible gobbledygook -- might be technologically OK but of ZERO value to any normal user trying to fix anything whether Windows or Linux.

I unashamedly admit most of my more advanced windows knowledge comes from themis and tenforums great tutorials.

These tutorials are the best in the English speaking world.

TBH not much point in people trying to tell me now how to install a TPM emulator as I realised I was only interested in seeing performance of a Windows guest compared with a Hyper-V guest, so I did the comparison using Windows 10.

I found KVM still not beat Hyper-V but was close but certainly better than inferior vmware or virtualbox.

This just proves type 1 hypervisors outperform type 2 hypervisors as a rule albeit less intuitive to use.

Why install a TPM 2.0 emulator? Just bypass compatibility check and you are good to go.

And there was nothing to install...just enable it and choose either emulation or hardware TPM

If my understating is correct - elevnforum is not a Windows Cult - for Linux related talks to be sacrilege. Even tho, you treat it as such - by spreading all kinds of misinformation about Linux based distributions (just blindly hating it in favor of Windows) - while at the same time - ignoring any compelling evidence which goes against your deeply flawed or outdated statements/conclusions. Looking around, Windows versions OS & Tech related news of all kind seems to be endorsed: Linux Mint 22 "Wilma" now released

Since by now (or even 10 pages back) - you made it very clear with all that you posted in this topic - that you hate/disprove any discussion Linux related - and your knowledge/understanding of it is so outdated - that your posts are basically just junk posting for the sake of increasing post count (60 - 70?! ) - so why still posting here - other than to reach 100+ posts where the quality of your content is "minus" - disinforming anyone reading your posts?!

As i already mentioned 10 pages ago - this is just 1 topic, the majority on elevenforum (98%) - are obviously Windows related - so why not talk about something you love and understand (and maybe spread some love/support and understanding instead)?! :eyeroll:

While windows in the server room can do all of those things, as somebody who works in the server room, it comes with a huge expense in terms of licensing. You couple licensing with software assurance and enterprise support... you now know the primary reason companies use less windows and more Linux.

Today, we are moving to containers for apps, and Linux containers own about 95% of this space.

We are not a Windows cult. I use windows, Linux and Mac and comment about all 3 on this forum. They all have pros, cons and fans/haters.
