Are you serious? This is 7th generation! Just bypass compatibility check to install. Yesterday I upgraded my 3rd generation one without issues! I think you just like Linux and look for excuses to install it everywhere. Don't confuse other posters to think their 10 year old computer is junk! It isn't junk and, yes, it CAN be upgraded to Windows 11 24H2. We are here to help others, not confuse them!

I would think since he said he made the installer using Rufus, that he actually did attempt to bypass the compatibility check. But I could certainly be wrong.

Rufus doesn't work yet for 24H2. It replaces a certain file from Setup cache and this hack doesn't work anymore. It will be upgraded. The only hack that still works is to open a Command Prompt as Administrator and execute the command setup /product server. To make sure there won't be a hidden online compatibility check that will fail the upgrade, make sure you disconnect from the internet until the upgrade is complete. All this info is on the relevant thread.

Hmmm, the only machines I still have around that don't meet the compatibility checks are my Intel Nuc's, which are intel NUC 5i5RYK's. I downloaded the 24H2 ISO from Microsoft using the MCT, used Rufus portable 4.5 to make a USB key and was able to successfully install the OS onto my NUC using a local account.

The CPU is a Core i5-5250u. 16GB of RAM. It does have a UEFI BIOS, Secure boot is disabled (because I usually run Linux on this box), and it does have Intel Platform Trust Technology (so TPM 2.0)

are you saying that only the upgrade won't work, but a clean install will?

Clean installation from a USB created from 24H2 ISO still works with the known Registry hacks or a script that automatically imports the values in Registry (see my post in this thread: Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware). Creating the USB with Rufus and patching it also works. Alternatively you can create a hybrid Windows 10/11 USB (MBR, Legacy boot only, it doesn't work in UEFI mode). This is a standard Windows 10 USB using the Windows 10 64-bit ISO with the file sources\install.wim (or sources\install.esd) replaced by the respective file from Windows 11 ISO. Replacing a .wim file with an .esd or vice versa also works, it doesn't have to be of the same format. Upgrade only works by running the setup /product server command. Even if you are doing an UEFI installation and have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, your CPU is not supported, so you have to bypass compatibility check to install or upgrade. You can then enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot as extra security measures, but they are not required to run Windows 11.

I didn't have to do that. I got ISO from MS, got Rufus, made the USB key. Clean installed to an i5-5250u Intel NUC.

I had a network cable attached, my BIOS is UEFI, secure boot is disabled in BIOS (as this little NUC is now normally reserved for Linux), and the Intel Platform Trust Technology (TPM) is enabled. So it's mostly the processor that was just not meeting requirements.

Rufus still works for a clean installation. Next version will also work for upgrade.

done that with Rufus and the registry Win 11 24H2 failed to upgrade so i decide a full clean reinstall.
using a Rufus made install USB the Win 11 24H2 install failed. this had Win 23H2 Pro installed.
reason for failure 'the CPU is not supported' and yes it does have SSE4.2 ..

so .. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS went on to the laptop which gives 10 years of security and software updates.
the laptop is 2017 .. Ubuntu is 2022 .. so its now viable until 2032 with an upgrade path if required.

Ran the windows update troubleshooter, it ran for awhile and came back and only shows 1 update now available.



I'm attempting to download and install that update now. KB5043178. Unlike the last pile, this one is at least downloading now and nothing has crashed, so we will see.

KVM/QEMU is a decent Type 1 Hypervisor. Latest Windows 11 Canary build works as expected, without any fuzz.

But at reduced performance because you are running Windows in a virtual machine. Better than nothing.

Runs better in the VM even if it was a Type 2 Hypervisor, since latest Canary doesn't even boot on my hardware.

Only reduced performance is only GL1.0 GPU acceleration. The rest runs as fast as on bare metal.

Agreed it´s not too difficult to get a KVM/QEMU Virtual machine to run indistinguishable from running on bare metal. If you have the appropriate hardware then "pass thru" components can make the VM perform even better since you are using the VM's OS rather than paravirtualised hardware.

For those not passing through hardware - install the windows virtio drivers from the virtio iso available from the fedora site (these drivers are installed on the GUEST and are valid for any Linux distro running KVM/QEMU. They act as Vmware tools in vmware etc -- which improve graphics, mouse, audio etc etc.

Valid signed by Ms -- use the latest one in the list. Attach to the GUEST and run the install.


Tip though for those using KVM/QEMU as a host and are virtualising W11 =-- if you select "Virtio" for both the virtual discs and the Network adapter you'll get better I/O and network throughput than using the standard SATA and default network adapter.

At Windows install time - for hard disk in this case ensure the virtio ISO is available to the VM and choose load driver in the windows install when it prompt for HDD to install to.

Also if you want to "back up the VM" - from WITHIN the VM chose IMAGE disk rather than CLONE disk if you are using VIRTIO since CLONE will just copy the VIRTIO disk which native windows or macrium can't read -- you want an image that can be restored from a "standard" disk. - Attaching a physical disk internal one or external usb device - no problems.

I used the latest VirtIO drivers, which are really good. Will try more VirtIO features at some point as I only enabled it for GPU/Display so far.

Thus is true for all virtual machines. Installing the drivers for the virtual hardware improves performance. Once I installed the drivers for a Windows guest in VirtualBox and then the official Intel 440BX chipset drivers. This improved performance more.

bit of an update ..
after reburning the Win 11 24H2 ISO with Rufus and (my bad) realising that i had downgraded Win 11 23H2 Pro to Home.
i completely wiped the SSD with Ubuntu Live then did a clean install of Win 24H2 Pro .. which installed without a problem.

the 2017 13" Dell Latitude .. i5 7200u .. 16GB DDR4 .. 250GB SSD .. Laptop is now running Windows 11 24H2 Pro.

Even companies teaching both Windows and Linux admit Linux is best suited for servers, ITs and programmers that need a stable light system but not do anything else with their computers. The average user that wants as easy as possible computer with maximum compatibility of hardware and software and also playing games should use Windows and avoid Linux, unless he knows what he is doing.
