You keep convincing yourself about this while we use whatever we feel like. Most computer users are clueless anyways, so it does not really matter what OS they use. They're still at a loss. Windows, Linux, MacOS all are fine.

I only use Windows for my personal hobby activities like I said. So, because none of these activities can benefit from anything that relates to Linux (at least not in any way that I can see), I don't need WSL, as I simply don't need Linux for what I do in this regard, i.e., for all my hobby stuff. However, I never use Windows for anything besides this. For work, I use something different, and that I am not allowed to publicly discuss (except that it's different, and physically isolated from my hobby equipment for both privacy and security). Although a lot of what I do for a living is linked logically to things like RHEL, Oracle Linux, etc. (I am an Enterprise Java developer, and, for the most part, I develop and maintain the kind of applications that run on things like WebSphere, WildFly, WebLogic, etc.), the subject of fixing typical Linux problems in those specific corporate environments of clients I work for isn't a part my job description. In a way, I provide the beans and do almost nothing else so that others can still have their fun toying with all the various coffee grinding machines. lol

@jimbo45 Thanks! VirtIO made quite a significant difference in KVM. Especially for NetworkIO.

C'mon folks --get over it.

No probs with Linux as a desktop -- forget all the Servers rubbish. They are good for servers because from the outset Linux is a multi-user system, can be installed with zero bloat, can be made extremely efficient and networking is far more stable and reliable than Windows workstation desktops - which are single user environments anyway. (Windows server versions are OK but usually hideously expensive).

Running a Windows VM in KVM/QEMU can be just as good as running "Native". On this small "Mini PC" with N100 CPU I'm getting BETTER performance and user experience than a colleague of mine running Windows Native on an I5 gen 8 laptop also with 16 GB RAM - although this mini PC has a decent 1TB Nvme instead of a "classical 2.5 inch SSD" which the laptop has.

I just don't buy it any more than VM's are hideously inefficient and can't run decent graphics / multi-media etc. if you use the right "Type 1 " Hypervisor. Both Windows HYPER-V and Linux KVM are now first class -- with KVM given top marks (by me anyway) because it's so much easier to do things like passthru and dynamically redirect not only usb devices but pcie ones too.

HOST : (Mini N100 CPU PC) :

Guest with 8GB RAM assigned and 4 virt CPU's - virtio drivers installed too. CPU usage (on host) even on this mini pc is minimal. No probs running full photoshop on this VM etc.

Forget all this "only good for Servers rubbish".

You said it yourself. For your leisure activities you use Windows. If Linux is that good why don't you use it at home as well?

I use Linux host 99% of the time, rarely use W11 as a host - my W11 VM's are perfectly OK for my needs. I run physical W11 when I want to test something like HYPER-V and VM's on that host. Running a 2nd / nested level VM while it works is not a good test really other than just to see if the system boots.

At the basic level yes, but once a user's needs become more advanced, the issue is about the learning curve needed to go to the next level.

I installed KVM on an ubuntu distro, and tried to add/enable a TPM2 emulator (even asking our resident Linux Guru) and sought advice from variois websites which came up with solutions but all of them fell over because I did not have other other dependencies installed.

Worse the dependencies did not seem to exist anymore in some cases.

Also answers ofen aplied to a different distro or version, and not another. Things are just not consistent.

In the end, I gave up.

However, with Windows 10/11 there are many helpful resources, including the brilliant tutorials on this and tenforums, particularly those tutorials from the greatest guru of all time @Kari (hope you recover soon, my friend, we miss you).

Also, I know this is not true of all Linux users, but I found many would answer a query assuming you had a good level of knowledge.

Contrast that with replies on this forum from users like @Bree, @Brink, @Glasskutter, and even @Kari who really do help newbs as well as more advanced users.

I know from my own wxperience (NOT RHETORIC) that help resources are nowhere near as advanced for Linux compared to Windows.

I cannot comment on Macos (which I refuse to use on principle) other than were't they soldiers in Star Trek Enterprise?

if using Gnome boxes .deb install TPM2 for Windows is set by default. last time i used Win 11 23H2 installed in Gnome boxes without issue.

I made sure KVM and it's dependencies were installed properly. Then I just opened the Virtual Machine Manager. Created a new VM and selected that I want to configure more before starting the VM...and THERE it was...TMP emulator. Just clicked on 2.0 in the dropdown menu and all was good.

Even Windows forced BitLocker on me without asking for my permission. Had to undo the changes.

You obviously don't edit photos or videos and you don't play any games. Yes, there are applications in Linux for these but not too many and not as versatile as the Windows applications, let alone easy to use. For example Handbrake is great and I use the Windows version a lot, but it doesn't have the option to see the video, so I need to use another application such as VirtualDub to find the exact frames to edit. VirtualDub is very good and had many filters, I haven't seen anything similar for Linux. Also I don't play games frequently, but my son does.

OMG...VirtualDub is like 30 years old by now and hasn't changed even a bit. Was a good tool though when you heavily modded it.

If it is a good tool and it still suits your needs, why change it? I also use the good old AVStoDVD when I want to convert videos to DVD or MPEG with specific file sizes. Other software that I have tried including FFMPEG can create MPEG files but completely ignore my bitrate settings resulting in either too small or too big file with quality affected. There are many applications in Windows without equivalent in Linux, let alone games, so I rather use Windows XP on older computers than install Linux on them.

PLEASE READ POSTS -- I use PHOTOSHOP a lot on a VM --if you don't think that's a photo editing app then I'd suggest you go back to bed and have a rest for a couple of hours when your brain might be in a bit of a better order. I've said "Ad Nauseam" that I'm not a gamer.

I don't do much if any Video editing -- I do mess around with Music files and dbPoweramp on a Windows VM works perfectly.

Many people don't need these types of apps -- use the tool what's appropriate -- when digging a new highway would you use a teaspoon or a JCB?.
