Microsoft even requires TPM 2.0 for Windows 11 virtual machines

If you were hoping to get around Windows 11’s TPM 2.0 requirement by running the operating system in a virtual machine, you're out of luck. People attempting to update to Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22000.194 in a virtual machine will have noticed a message warning them that

The 22000.194 update successfully installed for me on release with no warnings of Armageddon so far. VirtualBox VMs (Win 11 Home & Pro) still running normally on a 2013 MacBook Pro with an unsupported CPU and no TPM. So I'm still in the 'wait and see what happens group' with these VM's but, as they can be run from an external SSD, I can always hook up to a Windows Host System if necessary.

Added Note: Oracle VirtualBox does not currently provide TPM emulation or passthrough, but the developers seem to be working on their 'solution', which they will presumably be aiming to release around the same time as the official release of Windows 11.

Not sure where that piece of info came from or if it's even true
VM with emulated TPM works perfectly on build 194

Run the tpm diagnostic (install on the GUEST via "add optional features")

I created the VM from the iso downloaded via UUPDUMP.

I'm running a Hyper-V Windows 11 VM ver. 21H2 (OS Build 22000.192) on a non-compliant base system (my system 2). It seems to work fine, just a little slow at times. No warning messages at all. I have a different VM that is Gen 1 that did get a message that it's not eligible for the W11 insider program. Running winver shows that the current OS is 21H2 (OS Build 22000.192)

At the moment there is work on pass-through, so your host has to have a TPM 2.0. I believe this solves it easily if you have TPM on the BIOS/CPU activated on the host so VBox will pass it through to the VM.

I'll give it a go later on, installing 22000.194 update on QEMU/KVM VM.
So far, up to 22000.184 all works without TPM in VM by manual update installs.

EDIT: if needed, TPM can be added in KVM and Hyper-V VMs.
VMWare Workstation also has TPM so I've learned recently.

Ok, I got clobbered on this one too, I tried to update from 22449.1000 to 22458.1000 on my VMWare Player 16 and got the secure boot and TPM errors. Anybody know if VMWare Player is passing through the TPM and Secure Boot from the host to the guest or how to get around this issue?

Probably best to check their changelogs and forums, though we definitely have more than a few VMW users here so they may know off the top of their heads.

VMWare requires an encrypted VM to enable TPM

Here's a template I created in VMWare Pro but works in Player 16 as well. It has Secureboot and TPM.

Create a base VM in Player 16 called 'Windows 11 X64' and replace the .vmx with this one.

Player will ask for the decryption password - enter 'Win11'

Then add the .iso path to settings etc. to clean install.

Not sure how it will work with upgrades from existing VM's - others may know more - but suspect have to image old and restore to new encrypted VM...then upgrade or something.

I messed around trying to upgrade cloned version of my w10 install e.g. using wu, creating custom iso, upgrading in vm etc and they all fell over for various reasons.

The only method that worked was using Windows upgrade on host installation (backed up W10 first using good old Reflect of course).

So I could then clone W11 to a vhd, and revert to W10.
