Well I am doing an in place upgrade using the ISO from MS. I have run it many times both by mounting the ISO and expanding the ISO. The only difference is that this video bypasses the HW checks to force installation. My HW is all modern and compliant so at this time I don't believe it will alter anything. Working with zbook we identified driver problems and these have been eliminated. If and when we stop making progress I may try your suggestion. Thanks.

The BIOS on this laptop is pretty basic. At the moment there is no supervisor password set and you only get at extra options by setting one.

Results of DISMs:

I didn't understand the shrink querymax in a command window. As far as I know this is a DISKPART command.
It didn't run by itself.

4) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

I had problems with the DIR command.

I had to use the -recurse parameter which worked

I'm now going to run the chkdsk command

@zbook

I have been doing some reading and have come across a couple of ideas.

1) After the update fails and I get the inaccessible boot device message, it seems that one option would be to insert my USB stick with a Windows Recovery Environment, go into advanced options and try to use the Fix Boot Problems instead of letting it fail to boot twice and doing the automatic rollback.
Before trying this I would create a full disk image with Clonezilla in case things get messed up. Is this worth trying in your opinion?

2) Some writers mention that the Intel VMD can cause BOOT problems with Windows Update and in my case both VTX and VTD are enabled in BIOS. They recommend disabling these functions. Thoughts?

Please make a backup so that you can make trial and error steps as needed.

The remaining steps that I'd try are to create a new EFI partition and delete the current EFI and recovery partitions.

If you have access to the BIOS then check settings for AHCI, RAID, IDE.
