also worth mentioning, but when you login to your MS account you can run a web based version of Word and Excel for free that handle the vast majority of basic features that most people use.
The problem with the free versions is that they may be fine when generating new documents (albeit limited features), but they are not so useful when trying to edit files generated by other users with more advanced features.
Let's be honest - people here say they cannot afford MS Office but these same people have broadband, mobile phones etc. A lease of MS 365 costs around £5 per month which is more or less the price of 1 pint of beer in many parts of UK. I do not regard that as expensive.
I fully accept this is not true for everybody, particularly 3rd World countries, and there are some who genuinely cannot afford the cost.
But I bet in a lot of cases of people who will not pay, it is simply the endemic attitude many have i.e. I hate MS and refuse to pay them anything for software.
I could RIDICULOUSLY say "I hate Harrods - they make lots of money so their food should be free".
Of course, over time, leasing works out more expensive than one-off purchases (especially the grey market of dodgy licences).
So if cash strapped, ask yourself if you could afford £5 per month to get (as Tina used to sing) simply the best.
In the end, it all comes down to a person's needs but however one spins it, free options will never be as good as MS Office (and to lesser degree running old versions).
