The fixes for the current nosebleed , er, ahem, ZenBleed, is going to be upgraded AGES for the UEFI firmware. I suspect that as long as vulnerabilities are found that can simply be fixed with AGESA or other microcode for the CPUs they will, as well, continue to follow the same manufacturing processes for their CPUs as well. It will take time for them to entirely redesign the architecture to bhave those fixes built in to the hardware.

Honoured to meet the acquaintance of a fellow line crosser. I was once such an Intel fan boi. I'm a little more optimistic however regarding AMD's proclivity for addressing something like this at the architectural level. After all, they must live up to their name if they are to remain "advanced". Hardware mitigation isn't an option with vulnerabilities of this calibre. Ah well, I rather doubt I'll be buying much new hardware for myself anyway anymore.

Well, it isn't 2027 yet and who knows? If there are bleeding edge enthusiasts in their 70's who can afford such things by then let them fill their boots. What with Windows getting progressively (or should that be regressively) worse and Intel killing some of their best features (some of them tried and tested for decades) I'm having a hard time justifying the expenditure of a new build. Personally, I see no point. But that's just what I think. We're all entitled to our opinions. (And we're all living on borrowed time.)

100% Agreed. I read an article that went into the differences between Win 8 and Win 8.1 and I was shocked to learn that the changes made in 8.1 were greater than those that separated Vista from Win 7. It also behooves me to say that Win 8.1 was so much better. Yup. They should have called it Windows 9 but I imagine it would have resulted in public outrage as Windows 8 wasn't around very long because it was so horrid.

When the time comes that I'm ready for a new desktop computer I won't break the bank. Of all the computers I have purchased they have all been less than $1,300.00. Reading some of the post I see some users have paid more for just their videocards. As for being on borrowed time, I will agree that we are not guaranteed a tomorrow. I very good at upsetting my family physician. He has told me certain things I should do or give up. When he does I tell him no. Then I'll explain to him that I would rather have a short but happy life then a long but miserable life.

Nope. Not junk. Not "other" folder. Not dedicated Win 12 folder. Nadda.

I even tested to see if I gave them a different email addy. Nope. They def have my right address. So can't register another name on same email. I think their mailer is broken.

It's not really a big deal. If I ever need help with Win 12 I'll just ask my good friends here, in this forum and they can link me to the appropriate pages. I've been a member of these forums from 7 on up so I have enough mail to keep track of. :)

Current Canary Channel builds are Windows 12 builds!

Some of you may have noticed recent Insider builds for the Canary Channel are a good deal more unstable. That is because these belong to the Gallium development semester, which in turn belongs to Windows 12 development. So if anyone here wants to test W12 several months before it reaches end...

I'm sorry to hear that, because in the first few years of Symantec ownership, there were actually some really neat things done with Ghost.
The gave that old original Ghost, the ability to deal with NTFS drives, and 64 bit OS's.
And they wrote the "Ghost Explorer", which can run from within Windows, and can open up a Ghost Image file, so you can look into it, as easily as Windows Explorer can look into a Windows folder. I've not used that a lot, but I do have it, and it works a treat.
Then there was "Ghost for Windows", which could actually run from within Windows. I didn't care much for that one though, even though it worked.

But, to this very day, I still use Ghost 11.5, one of the last of the DOS based versions.
It just works perfectly, as long as there are no problems with the drives being used.

And, as far as cpu's are concerned.... I will only use AMD's.
My reasons for that, are based on years of experience building PC's, going all the way back to the 386 days.

The Windows 12 forum was certainly open the day that I joined!

Likewise! And they have already acknowledged the issue and have a timeline for getting hte fixes out, so that is definitely different than Intel stance with Spectre / Meltdown.

I vaguely recall a Win XP site much like this but I don't know if it was operated by the same admin or not. Things start to get fuzzy for me when I go that far back. No slight to XP, mind. I only wish they had that sort of dedication to end users today as they did back then. Yeah, I have my doc shaking his head at me too. I'm well into my sixties and I'm still raising three daughters. The youngest is about to turn twelve next month. lol Doc knows better than to suggest a snipping.

And speaking of XP, I found some really old discs of mine, going back to XP, so I'm working on getting them installed in VMs, including developing a .PS1 script to automate the VM creation with the exact options I want and file locations I want so I can fire up the VM and it start loading the installation .ISO.

Script works great. Windows XP on Hyper-V - not so much. OK, it actually works fine, but for some reason I cannot get it to connect to the Internet through my virtual switch. Working on fixing that now.

The XP site has some threads about installing XP on modern hardware! Yes, I have done it too some years ago. I had a customer that her old XP PC was dying and she bought a new PC. She didn't even want to hear about Windows 10, she wanted XP because that was she was familiar with. So I found the drivers from the respective device manufacturer or third-parties and managed to install XP on a Pentium Gxxxx CPU with 4GB RAM. As soon as I installed all the drivers, it was flawless and fast. Even today, if you have Firefox 52 (latest supported version) and Office 2010 (latest supported version), you can do a lot of stuff in XP. Even watch Netflix! Avoid latest supported Chrome as it doesn't open many sites for "security" reasons (yeah, right) while Firefox 52 still opens all sites. An exception I discovered is Disney+ (www.disneyplus.com) which requires a higher version of Firefox. It might work in Pale Moon browser though, haven't tried.
