Windows 12 ! Already....

1. VM.

2. It's installed but has 0 internet connectivity. NOT network adapter connectivity, not Virtual switch connectivity - it has an IP address assigned form my network, and I can see the 'device' in my connected devices listed in my router - it's just not seeing the Internet, and the host cannot ping the VM's IP and get a response. That is where I was at last night.

Something is acting strange, but I'll troubleshoot more this evening after work - I have some suspicions, but I need to play first.

Have you configured network right on the virtual machine? Have you installed the addons (drivers etc) ?

Yes to all. It had an IP addressed assigned by my (physical) DHCP router.

I simply removed the existing Virtual network adapter, added a new one, and it started working. Now using Legacy Update dot Net to get additional updates past SP3.

This thread is starting to grow a beard.
So let me cut to the chase, so to speak. It's really very simple.
When MS finally releases Windows 12, or whatever it turns out to be called,
the Aftermarket guys, probably somewhere in Europe or further East, will get a copy and tweak it, tune it, and take out all of the MS BS, and make it totally user friendly.
I'll get my copy, and you'all can get your copy, (except for the MS Fan Boys) install it and say "WOW". And we'll all be back here either complaining about it, or saying what a great OS it is. How do I know, because that's exactly what happened with Windows 11.

For internet on XP as a Hyper-V VM you need to set it to use the Legacy Network Adapter.

Incorrect. If you install the the VM guest tools you don't have to use the legacy adapter.

Like I said, Windows XP doesn't find all drivers automatically (the more modern is the hardware the less drivers are installed), so you have to install the drivers manually. This in virtual machines is done by installing the Integration Services (Hyper-V) or VMWare tools (VMWare Player) or additions or whatever it is called. If you know exactly which device is emulated (use Aida64 to find out) you can even install the official manufacturer drivers. For example installing Intel 440BX chipset drivers improves compatibility and performance. You can also install AMD PCnet drivers for network, assuming this is the model of the network adapter that the virtual machine emulates.

This is very useful knowledge for people who choose to run older, discontinued operating systems in VMs. I haven't run a VM in nearly a decade. New operating systems like Windows 11 don't find all drivers automatically either. The more modern the software the less it is likely to provide the drivers for older hardware and in some cases it can't provide them at all. This is to be expected as older hardware is phased out over time and rendered obsolete.

Having used Windows 3.1 and all the newer versions, I have learned that you must install drivers for all devices before you can properly use the computer. Windows 95 and 98 were supposed to automatically find drivers as newer Windows. Yes, this was true for really old devices, but not for contemporary ones. Unless you had a really old PC, you had only 640x480 16 colors graphics, no sound and not network until you installed the drivers. Since all other devices depend on that and configure themselves according to the motherboard devices, you must first install the chipset drivers so all motherboard components work properly. Then you install the graphics driver to gain full functionality of your graphics card and be able to select a better display mode than the standard 640x480 with 16 colors. and then rest drivers. Similarly in Windows XP, you install the chipset drivers first, then graphics so you can select anything else than standard 640x480, 800x600 etc resolutions. Even in Windows 10 and 11 without proper graphics driver (either from Windows Update or from manufacturer), you are stuck with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter which uses only standard resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 etc) and doesn't have hardware acceleration. In simple English this means your system is much slower because all graphics are handled by the CPU and the graphics adapter just displays them on screen. So always make sure you have installed all the drivers. In virtual machines means you install the additions/tools/whatever-are-called.

You would still have to install drivers to make it work. Even if Windows Update automatically finds all drivers, I don't want only basic functionality. I would install the full driver from manufacturer to get the most out of my hardware including the respective Control Panel (such as nVidia Control Panel, Intel Graphics Properties, AMD Catalyst Control Panel, Realtek HD audio properties etc) which is not installed by Windows Update.

I have Microsoft Windows 10 Home (32/64-Bit) Box.
Hopefully the key can be used for Windows 12.

If there is a free upgrade from Windows 11 to 12, then 99.99% it must. However you might need to upgrade to Windows 11 first before you can upgrade to 12. I am not sure if you will be allowed to upgrade directly from Windows 10 to 12. For example, you can upgrade from Windows 8.1 64-bit or 10 64-bit to 11, but not from Windows 7 64-bit.

That really goes without saying for pretty much all PCs. I always go to the manufacturer for graphics and chipsets. Third party driver aps frequently provide inadequate drivers and should only be used as a last resort IMO. They can also interfere with your ability to get future driver updates from the manufacturer.

If the last ten years have been any indication of the future you likely will be able to use this key for that purpose. Make sure you have a physical printed copy of the key available.

No need for a physical copy. You can use a tool such as ShowKeyPlus to find out which key you have and it can also export to a text file.

Sure. If you have it and it works. How much does it cost? I like Belarc Advisor but it won't do this for me in Win 11.

Of course you must use it while your system is running. Don't wait to fail! It can also read the embedded Windows 8/10 key in BIOS and tell you.

PS: Even if your system doesn't work, you can connect the disk to another computer and use ShowKeyPlus to tell you the key. I don't remember how it is done though.
