Windows can be made to "sleep" but won't "wake up" on keyboard/mouse interactions

Hello all,
I purchased a new SMPS and swapped it out to troubleshoot another longstanding issue (I still got double BIOS beeps and had to fiddle a lot before it is working again, so not even sure at this point :tears:).

After reconnecting all my peripherals again, the PC is not "waking up" after "sleep" (it goes to sleep yes). Pressing the power button on PC restarts the machine, does not wake it up. Keyboard and mouse are connected to USB 2.0 ports iirc

Things I already did.
Fiddled with power settings. Turned it off, applied change then back ON.

Screenshot 2024-11-17 105040.png
Ran
Powershell:
powercfg -a

powercfg /devicequery wake_armed

and other similar related commands helpfully suggested in this and other fora. None of them gave me any red flags as other forum replies pointed.

1731829781193.png

I unplugged the keyboard/mouse and added it to different USB 2/3 ports which is why multiple keyboard devices?

checked power management tab on mouse and keyboard in device manager -> properties. they are all fine.

Used AMD cleanup utility, uninstalled my adrenalin and did a complete factory reinstall to latest release.

My PC still won't wake up after sleeping.

Thanks for your help and advice.
surio.

On my PC you have to enable this in the BIOS. I found that having done this, simply touching the mouse would immediately wake the PC which I found not ideal. So I disabled it again which means I have to hit the power button to wake it again.

The wife has a cordless mouse for her PC which also goes to sleep after about 5 minutes, so it doesn't wake when you jiggle the mouse, you have to actually left-click it. Might get one of these rodents for mine.

Hello!

That's why I showed the command return for wake_armed that devices are setup to do what they are supposed to do.
Here's the response for /requests in any case.

Thanks for replying. But, like I said, less than 24 hours ago, sleep to wake worked perfectly, and the only change was swapping out the SMPS and thing were working perfectly earlier.

I too had to click my wired mouse and not just jiggle it earlier too. In any case, none of it is working and I didn't change any BIOS setting so far.

PS: My windows 10 machine is even more sensitive. It wakes up during different times as well. I probably need to check the wake timers on that machine now that we are discussing all this

Thanks,
surio

I'm not registered with tenforums and it won't allow me to download the batch file. I am not really keen on creating one more user login and password. I hope you'll understand. It's only windows 11 that has given me so many issues I had to make an account on this and other 11 fora.

Is there a way to share the bat file to me?

Lastly,
-devicediagnostic told me drivers were not set to auotoujpdate and fixed it.
-powerdiagnostic told me my monitor and device sleep time was longer than default and changed it.

Nothing more to report.

Thanks,
surio.

This is Microsoft's worst product man! Reminded me of this meme.

Here are the rest of the bat files in his links (Attached)

less LOGS.bat which has been removed.

I don't know what he wants you to use.

1. Tuneup.bat Run SFC, DISM and CHKDSK commands and use WMIC to change some settings
2. DiskParInfo.bat Collect WinRE, Boot Manager and Hard Drive information
3. Create_system_information_files.bat Generate a System Information file of your computer via a menu..
4. chkdskFromEvent.bat Extract all chkdsk information from Application section of Event Viewer.
5. SFCfromFile.bat Extract all SFC entries from CBS.log or CBSPERSIST*.log (if necessary).
6. LOGS.bat Windows Standard Log Collection w/ EventSearch (Technet)
7. Tuneup1.bat Run SFC, DISM and CHKDSK commands to repair system files and folders.
8. Tuneup2.bat Runs WMIC and BCDEDIT commands to set some basic startup, debug and dump settings.
9. GetMemoryConfiguration.bat Get memory configuration data via Powershell
10. GenFileList.bat Generate a List of Files and Folders within a Folder from File Explorer
11. getWindowsUpdateList.bat Extract a list of all Windows Updates applied to a system
12. Get_Powercfg_info.bat Use Powershell Powercfg commands to extract power and sleep information for the system
13. Upgrade_failure_info.bat Collect information about Windows upgrade failure.
14. RebootToBIOSSetup.bat Reboot computer to BIOS/UEFI Setup if allowed by User.
15. Tuneup_plus_log.bat Runs SFC, DISM and CHKDSK commands to verify or restore Operating System files.

I purchased a new SMPS and swapped it out to troubleshoot another longstanding issue
If the wake issue did not exist before you swapped power supplies, then I would be suspecting the replacement PS to be the problem OR
something that may not be right since you worked inside the case, but I'm sure you've checked that. You say you replaced it to solve other problems. What problems? Knowing what they were might be pertinent to this issue as well as knowing if changing PS fixed those issues.

Those Dell articles @zbook referenced pretty well cover troubleshooting for sleep/wake issues. Especially try booting in clean boot to eliminate it being software conflict as well as safe boot to eliminate any third party drivers.

But I will throw in my own experience which may or may not have any bearing at all on what your issue is. With many man-hours involved I fought a similar problem with my PC for over a year. Nothing would wake it nor could I use the power button to shut it down if it was sleeping. I had to do a hard shutdown every time if it was in sleep. I finally gave up and lived with turning off sleep completely and just having the monitor turn off. Then at night I would shut it down. I tried everything, more than once, finally chalking it down to a flakey mobo or bios update from the OEM.

When 24h2 was released, I had so many problems upgrading I was forced to clean install. Lo and behold, Sleep and wake has worked properly ever since as has the power button functions.

I had a windows update 2 days ago, but in spite of that windows was sleep/wake cycling till the SMPS swap out.

What problems? Knowing what they were might be pertinent to this issue as well as knowing if changing PS fixed those issues.
Link to that issue in my first post, and it is too early to know if sudden restarts are gone for good. But like I said in first post, the swap to smooth restart was a rough one. multiple times got the double bios loud beep and won't start, so removed connections randomly0 from SMPS to HDD or card etc and back again before PC is running fine now.

If SMPS is having problems I really won't be able to use the PC and type these or play a game or watch a video, which I can. Only sleep -> wake stopped working

thanks,
surio

Due to my ongoing issues with valinet explorer patcher I had to do a full clean install less than 2 months ago. So a lot of those debug things are moot. sleep -> wake was also perfect until one day ago.

You can call this a me issue, but this mode has been of zero utility/valu/use to me even last time it was recommended. I know zbook swears by it.

I am also on wifi which this mode restricts (idiotic in 2024 imo) so I have to redo the whole LAN cable to router again.

OK, Has anything changed in the last day? any new application installed, any windows update, any driver update, any hardware added?
Have you tried wake with all external peripherals disconnected. (except mouse and keyboard)
If you would I would like to see your power configuration.
Open a command prompt as admin and type powercfg -a

Sorry for late reply, I thought I had already answered this. Hibernate was never turned on for me. I have always kept it off. Thanks for your help though.
