How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2)

UPDATE 1/21:

UPDATE 1/16:

 Windows Blogs:

Today, Pavan Davuluri announced the latest Copilot+ PC innovation and the availability of the Windows 11 2024 Update. We are excited to continue to bring the power of AI and new experiences to Windows 11 and enhance what you can achieve using Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11. In this blog, I’ll share more information on the coming availability of new features and apps for Copilot+ PCs, details on how to get the Windows 11 2024 Update and details for commercial and education customers.

Coming availability of the newest AI experiences for Copilot+ PCs

We continue to introduce new AI features that light up more natural and conversational engagement with your devices, with experiences you can only get with Copilot+ PCs. Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs will be the first to experience these new features, leveraging the valuable expertise of this community before they become broadly available to customers, with a phased rollout to select devices and markets beginning in November. We plan to regularly share more information on the status of each new feature and app closer to the availability date, including by region and device silicon technology. When these new features and apps become more widely available they will be released to Copilot+ PCs via:

Windows Update:
  • Recall (Preview)1
  • Click to Do (Preview)
  • Improved Windows Search
App updates from the Microsoft Store:
  • Super resolution in Photos
  • Generative fill and erase in Paint

The Windows 11 2024 Update

Starting today, we begin to release the Windows 11 2024 Update, also referred to as Windows 11, version 24H2. This update is a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance. You can learn more about all the new features including enhanced battery saver; Bluetooth LE audio; HDR background support and support for Wi-Fi 7 in What’s new inside this update.

We are taking a phased approach with the 2024 Update rollout, based on when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience. We will begin with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H22 for those who have previously opted in to be amongst the first to experience new enhancements. (How can you be among the first to experience new features? Navigate to Settings > Windows Update, and turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”) For more information on ways to get the update, watch this video.

If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. Over time, we will make the 2024 Update available to more and more devices based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics and other factors that impact the update experience. We will let you know via the Windows Update Settings page3 when it’s available for your device. We will regularly share more information on the status of the rollout via Windows release health hub.

The Windows 11 2024 Update continues the annual feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions.

Information for commercial and education customers

Version 24H2 is now available through Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager), Windows Update for Business and the Microsoft 365 admin center2,4. We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. You can find more information on IT tools to support Windows 11, version 24H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog. Enterprise and Education editions will receive 36 months of support beginning today.

This release also marks the availability of the next Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. The LTSC provides customers with access to an option for special-purpose devices and environments, such as manufacturing, healthcare systems or other environments that require longer term device update stability5. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 is supported for five years. (Note: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is also available today and has a 10-year support lifecycle6.)

Experience the latest innovations in Windows 11

As I often note, installing the latest updates is the best way to keep your Windows device protected and productive with the latest features and innovations. We are committed to delivering continuous innovation to Windows 11 so that you can benefit from the best experiences as new features are ready. If you have not yet moved to Windows 11, now is a great time to do so, and Windows Backup is available to help you back up files, themes, some settings to many of your installed apps and Wi-Fi information. As is our normal practice, we will closely monitor the rollout of these new Windows 11 features, and continue to share timely information on the status of the rollout and known issues (open and resolved) via the Windows release health dashboard and @WindowsUpdate. Please continue to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub.

If you don't want to wait until 24H2 is available via Windows Update, then you could download the latest 24H2 ISO with MCT in option one below....

.... and then do an in-place upgrade to 24H2 using the ISO like below.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

This initial stage seems to be over. I'm now seeing 24H2 offered through Windows Update on machines with 'Get the latest updates...' turned off.

After my computers had been upgraded to 24H2, after seeing about everything that previously worked fine under 23H2 now suddenly stopped working under 24H2, I restored all my computers back up 23H2.

In 24H2, I could no longer scan (Canon MF654Cdw) from any of my computers, errors shows that the scanner is turned off, disconnected, or drivers not installed. Printing over the network never worked, variety of errors, and when it did print, the Color and B&W settings were ignored.

The network shares among the computers would work fine, then a few minutes later I have to disconnect them, restart Windows, and re-connect them again. Kept getting a "busy" share error message.

There were many more problems. After spending many hours trying to fix them in 24H2, I found restoring the backed up disk images of 23H2 for all my computers is the easier. Everything works fine in 23H2. I don't have time to waste on correcting/reconfiguring/etc. problems caused by 24H2 when 23H2 solves them.

I again have group policy (or regedit) on these computers to block 24H2, again. Hopefully those are not ignored as they were before.

I was a little surprised to see 24H2 being offered now as there's still that list of compatibility hold issues - for example Ubi games - I'd tried to uninstall older games using an older Easy Anti-Cheat but I've not yet seen any updates for that list of Ubi games.

I've let Windows Update install the 24H2 feature update now on one of my supported devices and am singularly unimpressed. I don't consider 24H2 ready for prime time yet.

For a start, it doesn't even show the feature update in Update history!

Updated a Dell 9720 to 24H2. Looked okay..... then Blue Screen. Rebooted, things working well then mouse froze. Rebooted again and mouse froze again.

Managed to get to settings and noticed Bluetooth mouse was considered "Not Connect". This mouse has been installed for over a year and a half. Removed device and re-paired bluetooth.

Ready for prime time ...... NO !

Last week my Laptop started showing the 24H2 Feature update as being available--nothing yet on my two desktops. So I decided to install it last Saturday. It successfully installed and everything was fine---or so it seemed..

Ran sfc /scannow and dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup. sfc was fine but dism command failed with error ox800f0983. Same code as Bree had in post #131. Could be for a different reason though.

Restored laptop to 23H2 with a Macrium backup I'd taken before starting. Will try it again in a few days after Patch Tuesday's releases in case there has been a fix in an update.

I have not yet got 24h2 available for my laptop in WU, although my laptop should be compatible...12th Gen CPU. I don't care getting it later BUT I wish MS would manage things in a different way. There is certainly a software, or hardware incompatible with 24H2 preventing my laptop to be updated. MS could show a message in WU, saying that Win24H2 update can't yet be installed on your system due to incompatibility with ..... If this is because of an application , we could choose to keep or remove it. It would anyway be nice to know what exactly is preventing the update!

Those with safeguard holds are supposed to see a message in Windows Update saying 24H2 is "...on its way to your device. There is nothing that requires your attention at the moment". If so, there will be a 'learn more' link.

By selecting the option to Learn More, you will be taken to a page offering a customized summary of any safeguard holds affecting your device.

The Safeguard holds affecting your device page shows known issues impacting your device and temporarily preventing it from upgrading to Windows 11 because of one or more safeguard holds.

Thanks Bree,
for me there is no sign of 24h2 (not even "On its way" or "Coming Soon". So no way to find out what's preventing the update.
