How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2)

UPDATE 1/21:

UPDATE 1/16:

 Windows Blogs:

Today, Pavan Davuluri announced the latest Copilot+ PC innovation and the availability of the Windows 11 2024 Update. We are excited to continue to bring the power of AI and new experiences to Windows 11 and enhance what you can achieve using Copilot+ PCs and Windows 11. In this blog, I’ll share more information on the coming availability of new features and apps for Copilot+ PCs, details on how to get the Windows 11 2024 Update and details for commercial and education customers.

Coming availability of the newest AI experiences for Copilot+ PCs

We continue to introduce new AI features that light up more natural and conversational engagement with your devices, with experiences you can only get with Copilot+ PCs. Windows Insiders with Copilot+ PCs will be the first to experience these new features, leveraging the valuable expertise of this community before they become broadly available to customers, with a phased rollout to select devices and markets beginning in November. We plan to regularly share more information on the status of each new feature and app closer to the availability date, including by region and device silicon technology. When these new features and apps become more widely available they will be released to Copilot+ PCs via:

Windows Update:
  • Recall (Preview)1
  • Click to Do (Preview)
  • Improved Windows Search
App updates from the Microsoft Store:
  • Super resolution in Photos
  • Generative fill and erase in Paint

The Windows 11 2024 Update

Starting today, we begin to release the Windows 11 2024 Update, also referred to as Windows 11, version 24H2. This update is a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance. You can learn more about all the new features including enhanced battery saver; Bluetooth LE audio; HDR background support and support for Wi-Fi 7 in What’s new inside this update.

We are taking a phased approach with the 2024 Update rollout, based on when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience. We will begin with eligible devices running Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H22 for those who have previously opted in to be amongst the first to experience new enhancements. (How can you be among the first to experience new features? Navigate to Settings > Windows Update, and turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”) For more information on ways to get the update, watch this video.

If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we may put a safeguard hold in place and not offer the update until that issue is resolved. Over time, we will make the 2024 Update available to more and more devices based on hardware eligibility, reliability metrics and other factors that impact the update experience. We will let you know via the Windows Update Settings page3 when it’s available for your device. We will regularly share more information on the status of the rollout via Windows release health hub.

The Windows 11 2024 Update continues the annual feature update cadence, with new feature updates released in the second half of the calendar year. This new version resets the 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions.

Information for commercial and education customers

Version 24H2 is now available through Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager), Windows Update for Business and the Microsoft 365 admin center2,4. We recommend that commercial organizations begin targeted deployments to validate that their apps, devices and infrastructure work as expected with the new release. You can find more information on IT tools to support Windows 11, version 24H2 in the Windows IT Pro Blog. Enterprise and Education editions will receive 36 months of support beginning today.

This release also marks the availability of the next Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024. The LTSC provides customers with access to an option for special-purpose devices and environments, such as manufacturing, healthcare systems or other environments that require longer term device update stability5. Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 is supported for five years. (Note: Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 is also available today and has a 10-year support lifecycle6.)

Experience the latest innovations in Windows 11

As I often note, installing the latest updates is the best way to keep your Windows device protected and productive with the latest features and innovations. We are committed to delivering continuous innovation to Windows 11 so that you can benefit from the best experiences as new features are ready. If you have not yet moved to Windows 11, now is a great time to do so, and Windows Backup is available to help you back up files, themes, some settings to many of your installed apps and Wi-Fi information. As is our normal practice, we will closely monitor the rollout of these new Windows 11 features, and continue to share timely information on the status of the rollout and known issues (open and resolved) via the Windows release health dashboard and @WindowsUpdate. Please continue to tell us about your experience by providing comments or suggestions via Feedback Hub.

Thanks! Didn't know about this method. I will check. Meanwhile I would have loved to understand why my Laptop is not getting the update! :tears:
At the beginning of October I used that Target feature update method successfully to get 24H2 one of my three supported laptops. Of the other two, one was offered it this week, the other is still waiting. There's no rhyme or reason to the rollout ;)

Windows Update not offering 24H2 yet? Want Windows Update to get 24H2 straight away? Set the Target Release Version for 24H2 then check for updates.....

Updated a Dell 9720 to 24H2. Looked okay..... then Blue Screen. Rebooted, things working well then mouse froze. Rebooted again and mouse froze again.

Managed to get to settings and noticed Bluetooth mouse was considered "Not Connect". This mouse has been installed for over a year and a half. Removed device and re-paired bluetooth.

Ready for prime time ...... NO !
My issue turned out to be driver related. When the Feature update was installed it refreshed drivers. This enabled the ability for the computer to turn off the bluetooth radio to save power. I disabled this questionable ability and the mouse is now back to normal operation.

How to get the Windows 11 2024 Update (24H2) - post #131
I think MS realized that I am getting inpatient and want 24h2 real bad! Even with Group Policy Editor modification I was not getting the update. But few minutes ago it finally showed up and it's downloading. Let's see how it will go! Fingers are crossed and backups are done.

Finally done! This took a long time to install compared to usual weekly updates. But after restart the PC was up a running under a minute. I have been using the PC and tried many things , including few Games (WOW , Guild wars2, VTOL-VR, Elden Ring) and all are running with no problem as before. My max CPU and GPU temp is 7 to 9 degrees lower! and if this not a placebo effect or if my judgment is not altered, it seems to me that my PC is responding much faster!
I will report if any problem arise , but all is working fine for now.

It does take a very long time to download and install it as it has a lot of recoding in it. I ended up installing it three times over my 23H2 build due to a bug crashing my file explorer every time I right clicked a file or folder with 24H2. I finally found a fix searching the web so now I have a stable 24H2 on both machines. I'll be honest I don't see any noticeable difference in speed, if anything on startup it might take a little longer to load my desktop startup apps but aside from the notorious upside down explorer menu all is working well now on both PC's.

Here is another feedback (Which I think not many will care about) but for me this was the MOST important thing. Latency and sound stability is the most important thing for me as I use my PC for audio production. I have been playing live piano VST in Kontakt and Garritan CFX Concert Grand (which is a 120 GIG piano sample) for almost an hour adding up to 20 different virtual instruments on top of the pianos and I did not get a single pop or noise. Before the update I was getting almost the same result (only few pops now and then) , but had to use a custom power plan (Setting everything to MAX). In balance mode I would get 100s of pops and clicks and stutters. This seems to be totally fixed and I can use the PC with balance power mode.

Only weird thing is that windows downgraded both my Intel and Nvidia GPU drivers to an older version then the ones I had before the update!

I'm going to presume that you updated these drivers and have no problems/issues?

I updated my nvidia driver to 560.94 and there was no problem at all. I didn't update the intel gpu driver yet, but I don't think there will be a problem either.

I've let Windows Update install the 24H2 feature update now on one of my supported devices and am singularly unimpressed. I don't consider 24H2 ready for prime time yet.

For a start, it doesn't even show the feature update in Update history! .....

.....More significantly, DISM /online /cleanup-image /AnalyzeComponentStore still shows the 2 (un)reclaimable images that can never be cleaned up.
How to identify Reclaimable Packages reported as count by "Dism /Online /CleanUp-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore" - post #26

But worse still, DISM /online /cleanup-image /StartComponentCleanup fails with error 0x800f0983.....
....There is no way I would want something that broken on my PC, and have immediately restored its 23H2 system image that I made just before upgrading.
.... I should re-visit my 2nd PC's upgrade (see post #144) and see if Patch Tuesday's update has fixed enough for me to consider keeping it this time....
...so I did. Two out of three isn't too bad, it can stay for now.....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

" ....There is no way I would want something that broken on my PC, and have immediately restored its 23H2 system image that I made just before upgrading. " .........right you are !

24H2 takes 14GB more , compared with 23H2 ............and no way still to get this space back !
(un)reclaimable images that can never be cleaned up .............a very good reason to stay on 23H2 , untill a lot of these bugs/errors are fixed.

23 And 24H2 has the same new features, but 24 hasn't have them yet (with clean install). I don't know about 23H2.

This is the last version of Windows 11 24H2 that I've got 100% working (non insider version).

Skjámynd 2024-12-15 105322.webp

Further updates just hose all sorts of things up, Languages is a mess etc etc.

So for regular use I'm just sticking with this version -- anything else I'll use on VM's until they get fixed.

Cheers

Just after Patch Tuesday my two Desktops were now showing the 24H2 Feature as being available. Decided to install it on my backup Desktop. Installed o.k. and everything seemed to work fine. The build was at 26100.2605 whereas the Laptop in Post #135 was 26100.2314. The only thing that fails is the DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup command. Restored to an image I'd taken before updating.

DISM_Log.webp

The results I am getting seem fairly consistent and that's on two different PC's. I don't think the average user will ever run that command so will not see the error and be happy with their update. Would have thought the Insiders would have encountered it though and reported to Microsoft.

Guys I have dilemma whether I should upgrade my Acer Nitro gaming laptop with Win11 v23H2 b22631.4602 to Win11 v24H2 using :-
1) Feature update offered through Windows Update or,
2) Disk image of Feature update
What is the download size of Win11 v24H2 Feature Update cuz I have a limited data plan with my cellular network?
Does pausing the update midway works?? 🤔🤔
