Already many years I am using my own-made password 'manager'.
That consists of a password protected spreadsheet (.xlsx) file, systematically build with many sub-sheets for different purposes, like log-ins for webshops, phone and energycompanies, forums etc.
I can make notes in the file, so I know when I changed something (and what I changed), if the shop is reliable, all kinds of things.
The passwords I use are normal longer words, followed by a special character and a 2, 3 or 4 digit number.
The words I use I don't want to reveal here, because that would make the system less useful.
But I will give an example how the passwords are formed.
I used English names of tools for this example but of course it might have been other subjects as well.
Passwords with toolnames would be:
Screwdriver#241
ElectricDrill#38
CircularSaw#66
Chainsaw#2418
Sandpaper#183
Workbench#392
Stepladder#819
etc.
I made a long list of usable passwords in a separate sheet and when I use the password, I mark it with a color and write the name of the company behind it.
So for instance, when registering to a webshop, I choose a password from that list, write it into the webshop list together with the login name or mailadress. When typing it into the registration sheet, it is quite easy to copy, because all words are existing words. Of course I can use copy/paste as well, but that depends on the site, there are sites that don't allow pasting passwords.
Now and then I make a copy of the complete file with all the shops and other companies I am having an account. At the moment I have about 150 different passwords in use, never use the same password for different purposes. The copy I save with date, so that I can grab back to older situations if neccesary. And of course the file is copied to backup mediums, on a backup medium outside my house as well (at the house of a family member). The password I use for the file itself is long enough to be safe, short enough to remember easily. It is password protected by 256-bit AES encryption, that should do for the purpose: it's not secrret-service I am trying to protect, just a file with passwords for webshops and other such purposes.
I always have to fill in the password when I am logging in at some site. That happens about three times a week as I am not buying very much things online, so no problem at all to open the file for that purpose. Never have any passwords stored in browsers, I don't trust the way they use protection. Only for forums I usually have some cookie setting so that I don't need to login every time I am opening the site.
Passwords I am using for banking or official authorities I don't save in that file. They are only stored in my head (and that of my wife). But those password too are built of a certain system and there only are two of them, cecause all other authoities need other ways of logging in these dayes (we have DigID).
Although it is not a real password manager I thought it might be useful to mention that possibility as well.
