Planning A New Build in late January.

Back in post #178 i stated that i was having issues with multiple errors like the pic in that post. Well I still have problems. Every time I restart or shutdown the system will freeze and give me an error. I would have to hard shutdown. I'm thinking it better not be any of my new hardware. Then that very dim light bulb turned on... I moved my StarTech USB 3.0 card from my old system. I thought NA! That cant be it it never gave me problems. So I pulled the card and Vola! I shut down and restart with no issues. Why would that card start to give me problems out of nowhere??? Well at least I found and fixed the problem.

YA! This the old backup. In case things go south. It'll give me access to everything I need.
Steel frame and it reasonably have. Its an arborite top but I'm going to replace it with a solid wood top.

IKEA has some butcher block counter tops. They're no longer cheap. :(

Home Depot as well...

And ofc, if you take out a 2nd mortgage, you can get one-piece, solid wood planks, slabs or flitches.
But that can get expensive. 8-)

Image1.jpg

Probably the cheapest decent sized slabs that are hard enough to make a desk out of, are Oak, Walnut or Mahogany

Here ya go... only $4200.00 140" x 30+" x 2.5"
You could make two desks from this bad boy...
Black Walnut (note: they put water on some of the pics to show what it will look like... with a finish on them)

:D

The most gorgeous wood on the planet is Kingwood.
When finished it's black and purple with white edges. And the finish is like wet glass.
Unfortunately, it's impossible to get large pieces.
Also, after sanding... you have to seal the wood fast, or the purple turns brownish.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Neat and Practical yes... But I'm no different from you. In time it will be clustered. The wife will have to grab me by the ear and drag me to my office and make me clean it up. That's what 46 years of marriage does to you. But I'll give it the old college try and keep it neat and clean. "No Guarantees" ;-)
We are tied in # of years married if unlicensed marriage is included. Otherwise, for me, it is is only 40 years. I find it interesting that judging by your picture we could easily pass for brothers. I'm in Western Canada though, and I'm pretty much in the wilderness. Population here is less than 2000 people and I'm less than 15 minutes from a lake on either side of town. The oil industry has kept me busy in the past and rig workers love to game. Alas, govt is leaning on me to officially retire now and I suppose I must. Right now, our little town is chaotic as Canadian Fibre is running lines all over the place. Despite the small population it looks as though 10 GBs will be a reality here. (Not that I could afford it or need it.)

I remember when I was a lad and the old timers would grumble about how 'they don't make things like they used to'. Today, I'm the old timer and I'm saying the same. One must not stand in the way of progress however and I have tried to be flexible within reason. My 80 pound Thermal Take Lvl 10 GT sits, straddled on a pine plank over my oak desk and my L shaped melamine black computer desk with the roll out drawer. Inside that drawer I keep an active IBM PS2 keyboard for when USB goes nasty on me, because it can and occasionally does, regardless of drivers or settings. I switch back and forth between my AMD build and my Intel depending on what I'm doing. Both have their plusses and minuses and both are octocores. I have to say I'm a little bit more impressed with the Intel chip and rightly so as it cost nearly twice what the AMD chip did.

I see no practical reason for building myself a brand new PC. Seems you picked the perfect time as we are roughly both the same ages. At some point I'll work up the courage to plug in my TMP2 key and pray I don't lose my dual boot or my Linux. Perhaps this summer. No rush. lol Only in Canada, eh?

Well that explains the empty slot at the back of your case. I've consistently had good results with Startech cards. Perhaps it needed a driver update. You could probably use it in your older PC if that doesn't fix the issue. I have something similar to this. I got it because it came with an extra USB pin out header, which I find so many of the newer system boards lacking these days despite the fact that even such things as PSUs will require one. I wouldn't give up on the old girl yet. Startech generally makes pretty good cards.

Ha, ha ha! The wife says yes, but my eyes are blue.
I would say we are close. I would call us Brothers. I even have a leather jacket just like that. But my hat is gray.

There was a western, can't remember the name but it had an evil sheriff who had 5 deputies.
The deputies all wore identical light tan trench coats.
They looked like they were made of really thin, soft leather.
I always wanted one of those coats.
But then I would have had to buy some Colt 45's to go with. :-)

I know what you mean. The wife is just the opposite. She has short arms coz she's short all over. Good thing those arms come with guns or she'd have me lifting everything with my bad back. Still, long arms are useful and I'm constantly reaching for things in high places for her. We're a good team. :p

Gene Hackman was the evil sheriff in Unforgiven. Don't recall any trenchcoat like garb from that one.

Brain Dennehy. Silverado. Way back in 1985. Kevin Costner was 30 then, and played younger than that.

That Napa leather jacket I was wearing in the picture comes down to my knees. It makes for a good raincoat in this climate. Still, I wouldn't mind owning one of these if it came with the large pockets inside for the "extras".

The movie you might be thinking of is Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider. There was a town kingpin who hired a corrupt marshall and his six deputies in that film. Of course Eastwood takes them out one by one until it is just the marshall, played by John Russell, and Eastwood's character facing one another. An image from the movie here with Russell in the middle.
