What would look nice is a solid oak encasement with a tempered glass side panel that you could open up like a china cabinet. Mind, a computer case like that wouldn't come cheap.

I am a wood worker. I come from a family of carpenters, cabinet builders and finish carpenters. My grandfather was a Master Carpenter. He used hand tools over power. You have me building this thing in my head. I could use dovetail to tie the frame together. Glulam oak and make a back panel and find a way to clip it into place and lock it in. The inside of the case for the MB mounting would be problematic. I would have to put a lot of thought into that. Yes it is doable but would take some time with failures to come to a prototype never mind completion. There are so many variables invaded with this build. I can't count them all. But it would be fun to try and build. Not saying I'll even take this task on.

And I AM a Master Carpenter (union), and Master Cabinet Maker...


There's been loads of wood cases, even wooden keyboards.
The wooden cases generally have heat issues. :(

Yes, Virginia. Wooden PC cases do exist. Some of them are quite elaborate. Both my grandfathers were carpenters and I've done a bit of that sort of thing myself. My father built automatic transmissions from scratch and was proficient in electronics. He actually went to college and got wall paper for that sort of thing. I did not. (I was too busy chasing girls and ideals to take life seriously enough to put my nose to the grindstone.) Sadly, I have enough going on in my life presently to take this challenge to task, but the techi in me lives on, with or without the licensing. My girls (all four) keep me busy and that is often why I willow wisp the forums. Now you see me, now you don't.

It behooves me to say that if fiat were no object I would likely get one (or build one) of those desk PCs that really do become part of the desk but, from a more pragmatic approach, I'm quite pleased with what I have. Still, it's nice to look at 57 Chevys even if I'll never own one. :-)

Years ago, when I worked in a little PC repair shop, my boss, a real PC Guru, showed me one very important difference between an Intel cpu and an AMD cpu.
I had PC's with both cpu's on my bench, and running. He pulled the plug for the CPU fan on the Intel cpu and the PC crashed (shut down) in just a few seconds. Then he did the same thing for the AMD cooler. The AMD CPU throttled back some, but kept right on going.

He explained to me, that the AMD CPU chips were made with a temperature control circuit in them, that would reduce the clock speed, so that the chip would generate less heat, and keep on going, in case of a cooler failure. Cooler fan failures were common back in the day.

Later, when I was working for myself, doing PC Repairs and running service calls, I got a call from a customer complaining of his PC running SO SLOW! I got there, only to find the CPU Cooling fan locked up and way too hot to touch. (I actually did touch it, and it burned my finger)
So, from my parts kit, I installed a new cooling fan, and on reboot, the CPU speed came back up to normal.

So, even with the CPU cooling fan locked up tight, the AMD cpu kept on running, and the customer was still able to use his PC, all be it, a bit slower than normal. In all the years since then, and with all the PC's I've built, I've never bought a single Intel cpu chip.
And with the many AMD chips I've bought, I've never had one fail on me.

Today, on a old Gigabyte motherboard, that I bought on Ebay, I'm running an AMD, FX-6350, Six Core CPU. Never Over-Clocked and still running just great! This same CPU chip, outlasted its first motherboard and is now on motherboard #2.
When I bought this CPU Chip, years ago, I bought another one (8 cores) at the same time. That one too, is on it's second motherboard, and is the fastest PC that I own.
