Generally speaking, those who push their hardware to the absolute limits with overclocking can get better results with an AIO. More often than not, I think many run the AIO's because of the
  • Perceived coolness factor
  • AIO's often have RGB lighting for cool effects
  • They like having all the radiator fans in their cases...providing more cooling.
  • The AIO's are often smaller, so they don't block the view of the rest of the motherboard and such and that's a desired aesthetic for some.
I'm personally still running on air cooling. I have a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler on my AMD Ryzen 5900x and is very similar to your Noctua Chromra Black. I looked at the noctua when I bought my Dark Rock Pro 4, but I got a good deal on the Be Quiet model and felt it would perform just fine for my setup. And it totally does.

I just did a short video on running prime95 with the core temp app showing the CPU temps. I think my Noctua Chromax Black handled it quite well.

I'm just curious. What is your idle temps? I just thought that it would be interesting to see different Air Coolers to AIO temps. Of course you'll need CoreTemp Here's where I sit on idle with my Noctua NH-D15 chromax black.

For me, on my Ryzen 9 5900x, my idle temps are approx. 35C.. My ambient temps are around 22c. I have my box fan curves set to quiet.. I never really watch my CPU's under load. I have no issues when I am gaming so that works for me. My cats like to sit on the top of my case however as the air coming out is nice and warm for them.

This is humorous. I recently swapped out a system board with a Hyper 212 in it last week and replaced it with the original Intel cooler. Because of the way the PC is designed (it uses an intake tube) the original cooler does a slightly better job than the Hyper 212, which, incidentally, was not a half bad cooler for the price, although there are cheaper ones on the market now that can beat it at today's prices. The missus still gets to boast the coolest PC in the house with her Noctua NH-D15 with me running a close second with a Noctua NH-U12DX.

I've never bothered with liquid or water cooling and likely never will. There's just something about it that makes my skin crawl.

I try not to visualize scenarios of sticky liquid leaking throughout the case, making a horrendous mess. (Not to mention the shock value.) Even Jay from Jayz Two Cents has had his moments so it doesn't matter if you're a pro at building liquid cooled systems. Stuff still happens.

At idle the temp on my GPU is 47c. So I ran IDA64 and ran a stress test. And after 4 minutes, I was at 93c. It is old. So in the morning I think I'll break it down and repaste the gpu. I think this is a good idea. Hers a pic of idle and stress test. My first time breaking down a GPU but it looks simple.

I don't think the problem is the GPU thermal compound.
I would guess it's more like your 290 is getting a bit long in the tooth.
Today's grfx demands are a lot higher than they used to be in the R9 290 days.


This is my RTX 2070, which itself is getting a bit old...

The GFX card is still good. It's just not the best card for a brand new build sporting brand new hardware. If it hasn't been re-pasted then I think it might be a good idea to do that too, but in this case it will likely be more of your CPU demanding more from the GPU than the other way around. You can get by with that card if you don't work it that hard but if you're planning on using it for video rendering, gaming, or anything seriously demanding in the GFX dept. you're going to need to get a new card for that build.

I don't normally do anything heavy demanding on the GPU so it never really gets that hot. It surprised me though when I ran the stress test and went up into the 90.s. I'll keep this card for the time being but am thinking about the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. But I'm going to repast just for the fun of it.

Well I found the card I want. It's in my cart and I'll get it next month. Tell me what you think? I also repasted my R9 290X. The thermal paste was dry and crusty but it made no difference at all.
