I'd recommend that your older graphics card be kept (or sold) for an older build. It's still a good performer and you can take care of those high temps with MSI Afterburner to a large extent with a fan curve just as Ghot suggested; but as I stated earlier: There's still life in the old girl yet.Well I found the card I want. It's in my cart and I'll get it next month. Tell me what you think? I also repasted my R9 290X. the thermal paste is dry and crusty but it made no difference at all.

I'm surprised that a proper cleaning and reassembly with new paste did not change anything. It almost always takes the thermals down a couple of notches at least. That card, despite being known as a high performer, was notorious for high thermals as well. If it just peaks at 90 ℃ it's not a big deal. If you're thermal throttling then yes, you have an issue. It goes without saying that the card was designed for an older style system board, but it does run well on the board in the above video, made in 2023. The RX 590, 580, and 570 in my home all run on older system boards and for the most part these are doing well. (They also all run Direct X 12.)
I know SOME here will disagree with me but it has been my personal finding over the past couple of decades that with AMD GFX cards these do tend to run better on AMD platforms. (I rather doubt AMD would disagree.) NVIDIA, on the other hand, tends to run well on both Intel and AMD platforms so perhaps that is one excuse NVIDIA has in its pocket to falsely justify their price gouging. Linux tends to work well with AMD cards.
I'm not a hard core gamer and the games that I do play work fine on a 1070 because they are extremely dated. I seriously don't need anything better. So there's not much I can say about these newer cards from personal experience as I don't use them and I haven't built anyone a high end system since the wild fires came through. If I could afford a 4060 I'd probably set that cash aside until I had enough for a 4090. After discussing the differences between these two cards with a friend of mine (who has zero dependents) but again, it really does come down to user preference.

- I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
