Years ago, when I worked in a little PC repair shop, my boss, a real PC Guru, showed me one very important difference between an Intel cpu and an AMD cpu.
I had PC's with both cpu's on my bench, and running. He pulled the plug for the CPU fan on the Intel cpu and the PC crashed (shut down) in just a few seconds. Then he did the same thing for the AMD cooler. The AMD CPU throttled back some, but kept right on going.
What you are describing is a process called thermal throttling. In the old daze Intel would in fact just shut down the chip when temps got too high due to fan failure. I believe there is a way today to make Intel chips function without a running CPU FAN but I know they still have that safety built into the boards (although Intel no longer makes system boards). AMD still offers the "carry on" option on many of their system boards with a warning. A huge heat sink without a fan can keep a CPU safe for standard tasks in many cases, but for the most part a cooling fan is advisable.
Like you I had a mentor who was a real guru and leaned toward AMD systems. He's scope everything and constantly ran numerous diagnostics I wouldn't even think of. Myself, I became the student understudy rebel who preferred Intel CPUs. Today, my fan boism has subsided and if it were not for Spectre/Meltdown I would likely still favour Intel. Today, I'm about 50/50 on the red vs. blue. But I digress.
AMD made several tough old boards back in those days and the 12 year old FX-6350 Pile Driver shouldn't be excluded from the list. This chip certainly gave Intel a run for the money when it came to PRICE vs Performance. Back then AMD chips also tended to run hotter than the competition but they were also built to take the heat. . . Well, within reason. Still, 4.2 GHz on this chip wasn't unheard of and it became a favourite among over clockers in it's day. Magemeister, you definitely do NOT have a slow PC there. Nice find.

- I own too many laptops: A Dell touch screen with Windows 11 and 6 others (not counting the other four laptops I bought for this household.) Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
