Solved slow computer boot up

It no longer takes 1 - 1 and1/2 hrs/GB.

The duration is unknown.

Memtes86+ is free and can run indefinitely.

Memtest86 free version only runs 4 passes.

Memtest86 pay version runs 8 passes.

So Memtest86+ is used to be able to run 8 or more passes.

Memtest does a better job, so most Technicians use that to detect bad RAM. One pass should take a couple of hours or less depending on the speed and amount of RAM. It is safe to say that if it passes one complete test the RAM is OK. You do more passes only if you want to or you let the computer test RAM during the night. If the RAM is faulty you will see the screen filling with red text error messages and you stop the test, no point to wait the full check. Then you must test each memory module separately to find the faulty one. If all modules pass separately, then you might have a faulty slot. Use one module to test all slots separately. If all pass separately, then there is some incompatibility when combining the modules in dual channel (cannot keep up with the higher speed). Use them mixed in single channel mode (assuming they are not all same capacity).

PS: Sometimes a memory module may have a loose connection leading to errors. This might be because not properly seated in the slot or dust. Switch off the computer, remove the modules, gently clean their contacts with a cloth and make sure they are seated as good as possible in the slot. If you see dust on the slots blow it away using an air spray or blower, then put back the modules in the slots. Test RAM again.

the forum thing and zbook says i need to wait for 8 passes, so are you sure one is okay? also, would that need me to open up my laptop? never done that before so do you think would be better to get it serviced?

I find more than two passes unnecessary. If the RAM is faulty you should see errors from the first test circle. I would try to diagnose first myself and if I find any issues I would ask for professional service. Warning, don't tell them you opened the case or they might claim the Warranty is void! Just tell them you blowed dust externally, you tested RAM with Memtest and other symptoms you saw.

i havent opened it yet and i really would not try to do it myself.

@zbooks would 2 passes be fine then?

i probably would go to professional services because i really do not trust myself with this, i feel like its better to just get it done by someone that knows.

Some Services charge a minimum fee if they find nothing wrong and just give you back the computer. I would try my best to diagnose using free tools like Memtest, Hard Disk Sentinel and others before asking for professional service. Any friend a little more experienced to help you? Of course if you are not confident DON'T open the case and don't trust your friends doing it.

i meant if the ram comes out as faulty, and yes ive done multiple tests and used softwares like hard disk sentinel with zbook in this thread, and yeah for sure.

no i dont have anyone else experienced and i definately am not personally, i guess ill sre after the memtest.

I've never seen a large volume test comparing the two software.

Performing an inadequate number of passes may display a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.

This would be a false negative.

When a test is performed the goal is 100% accuracy.

The more the number of false negatives and or false positives the lower the accuracy.

The testing environment is crucial.

This would be a false negative.

When a test is performed the goal is 100% accuracy.

The more the number of false negatives and or false positives the lower the accuracy.

The testing environment is crucial.

alright got it, ill do 8 then. just wanted to ask as the other person had said 2 was fine ! ill post the results as soon as i can, thank you for being so patient

Memtest is very reliable. If the RAM is faulty it will find it in the first test circle. If the first circle passes, then it is unlikely to find errors in the second or more circles. That said many times I let my customer computers run Memtest overnight, simply because I don't want to wait two hours to see if the RAM passes the test and just to rule out any false negative (very rare) as you say. The purpose of multiple passes is to warm up the RAM and see if it is affected by overheating. But a single test circle is too long so it will overheat anyway before it completes and any errors due to overheating should be seen without having to repeat the circle.

Yes, if you have too much time to waste. Unless they let a computer run Memtest overnight, Professionals do just a single test circle and then they work on another computer. They want to diagnose and repair as many computers as possible in their working hours. They cannot afford to spend the whole day in a single customer. In fact they want your RAM to fail so they can replace it quickly and start another computer. They don't like to wait for a full test circle with no errors and then having to do more tests to figure out what the issue is.

assuming i dont, would 1-2 really be okay? because the BSOD posting format and one of the windows 11 forum rule things say you need to wait for 8+ passes at minimum
