I bought my first apple computer, a macbook pro in 2014. Reason I got it, was that for work I always had a work laptop and it was windows based. My home computers were windows based. I was a windows and Linux server engineer for a living, but I had no experience with Apple. So, I figured might as well give it a shot. I wanted my own personal laptop, but was just not excited to get yet another windows 8 machine at the time.
It was $1399 or $1499 at the time. My work laptops were about $1400 to $1700 at the time. So, the Mac wasn't really much more expensive. And the retina display has been fantastic.
The best part of the Mac laptop has been its incredible battery life as well as the ability to go to sleep and immediately come back from sleep. It's still working fine 9 years later. It holds a charge, but it doesn't support the last few OS's.
We got my daughter a new macbook air with the M1 and the performance and battery life is incredible. I wanted a newer m1 based Mac myself, but didn't need to spend $1500 on a new laptop. So, instead I got a Mac mini refurbished from Amazon. It scratches that itch for me to have an Apple to know the OS, and to have ability to use things for Apple, Windows and Linux.
